Senior post scores 27 as Falcons down Miami, 88-59, for 20th win of season
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Allison Day scored a game-high 27 points on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 4), leading the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to an 88-59 win over Miami University. The Mid-American Conference matchup was held at the Stroh Center.
Elissa Brett and Nyla Hampton scored 14 points apiece for the Falcons (20-2, 9-1 MAC), who remain tied atop the MAC standings.
On Alumnae Day at the Stroh, with over 30 former Falcon greats in attendance, Day scored 15 points in the first quarter alone. She single-handedly outscored the RedHawks (8-15, 3-7 MAC) in that period as the Falcons surged out to a 27-13 lead.
Miami narrowed the BGSU lead to 10 points at the half, but the Falcons went on an 8-2 run early in the third period to take a 14-point lead, then used a 10-0 run later in the quarter to go ahead by 20 points. That lead never fell below 20 points in the fourth period.
BGSU shot 45.2 percent from the field, including a 10-of-25 (40%) effort from three-point range, and the Falcons had a 41-34 lead in rebounding. The Orange and Brown forced Miami into 22 turnovers while committing just nine themselves, and BG had a 30-2 lead in points off turnovers.
Jocelyn Tate had eight points in the win, while Sophie Dziekan, Amy Velasco and Jasmine Fearne scored six apiece.
Day was 12-of-18 from the field and had a game-high three steals, while Hampton had five assists to lead all players in that category. BGSU had 25 assists on 33 buckets in the win.

NOTE OF THE DAY
• BGSU, as mentioned, is now 20-2 on the year. The 2022-23 team is the 21st in school history to win at least 20 games in a season.
• Those 21 20-win seasons have come in the last 37 years.
FIRST QUARTER
• For the ninth time this season and the sixth time in 10 home games, the Falcons never trailed. BGSU scored on seven-straight possessions to begin the game, scoring 16 points in less than four minutes.
• A Nyla Hampton offensive rebound led to an Ellisa Brett three-pointer, and an Allison Day layup gave the Falcons a 5-0 lead less than a minute into the contest.Â
• Day found Jocelyn Tate for a reverse layup, then drove and scored herself, giving the Falcons a 9-3 lead. hit a jumper, and Lexi Fleming's pass resulted in a corner three by Brett. When Day put back a teammate's missed shot, the Falcons' lead was 16-8 with 6:13 still remaining in the opening period.
• Tate knocked down a pair of free throws for a 10-point lead, and a Day layup at the 3:07 mark gave the Orange and Brown a 21-10 advantage.
• Day would score BGSU's last nine points of the quarter, with a baby hook, a layup and a short jumper in the span of just 49 seconds. The latter shot gave her 15 points and her team a 27-13 lead.
SECOND QUARTER
• The teams traded points in the second quarter, with Sierra Morrow scoring Miami's first five points, but the Falcons countering with a Sophie Dziekan layup and an Amy Velasco three-pointer. But, Maddi Cluse hit a long-range shot, and a Peyton Scott short-corner jumper cut the BGSU lead to nine, at 32-23.
• Dziekan found Hampton for an open layup, and Day hit a pair of hook shots on back-to-back possessions. The RedHawks cut the BGSU lead to seven points on a Morrow jumper, and Ivy Wolf's free throws at the 1:44 mark narrowed the Falcons' lead to just six. But, Hampton's layup was followed by a Tate free throw, and after Wolf hit two more shots at the stripe, Tate knocked down another charity toss, and Hampton beat the halftime buzzer with a long-two pointer that gave BG a 45-35 lead.
THIRD QUARTER
• The Falcons pulled away in the third period. After Amani Freeman opened the second-half scoring with a layup, Hampton found Fleming in transition for a corner three. Wolf answered with a layup, but Hampton picked up another assist, as her pass to Brett in the other corner resulted in a three-pointer and a 51-39 lead. Then, after a Miami offensive foul, Tate threw the ball inside for a Day layup, and the RedHawks used a timeout.
• Scott hit a layup out of that timeout, and a Cluse jumper made it a 10-point game, but Velasco found Day for a baby hook, and Brett followed with a three-point play. Tate kicked the ball to Hampton for a three-pointer, and Hampton then picked the pocket of Sydney Watkins and sailed in all along for a layup. The Falcons had a 10-0 run and a 20-point lead, 63-43.
• Day scored BGSU's last four points of the period, and the Falcons had a 19-point advantage after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Velasco's three-pointer after a Day offensive board gave the Falcons a 70-48 lead early in the period, and when Dziekan kicked the ball out to Hampton for another triple, the Falcons had a 25-point lead with just under eight minutes to go.
• Olivia Hill's pass found Jasmine Fearne for a three-pointer and a 78-54 lead with 3:33 on the clock, and Velasco's pass resulted in a Dziekan three-point play just over a minute later. Jaci Tubergen spotted Fearne for another triple, before Payton Moore scored BGSU's final four points of the day.
• First, Moore cleaned up a teammate's miss and put the ball back up and in. Then, she stole the ball near midcourt and sailed in for a layup and an 88-57 lead. Freeman's layup at the buzzer cut BG's lead to 29.

• Cluse led the RedHawks with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Freeman scored 11 points and Morrow 10.
• Brett and the Falcons held Wolf to eight points on 2-of-14 shooting. Wolf entered the game averaging a team-high 18.5 ppg.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons are on the road for four of the next five games, beginning Wednesday (Feb. 8). BGSU will face Ohio University in a 7:00 p.m. start at The Convo in Athens.
