Brett named to MAC All-Tournament Team; Falcons will learn their postseason fate Sunday night
CLEVELAND, Ohio – A fast start by the University of Toledo was too much for the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to overcome on Saturday (March 11), as the Rockets went on to a 73-58 win in the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
Allison Day scored a game-high 18 points for the Falcons (27-6), the tournament's second seed, and Day tied for team honors with eight rebounds.
Jocelyn Tate and Elissa Brett had 13 and 10 points, respectively, with Brett pulling down eight boards to tie Day for team honors.
Brett was named to the MAC's All-Tournament Team.
Quinesha Lockett scored 17 points and Jessica Cook 16 for the top-seeded Rockets (28-4), while Nan Garcia and Jayda Jensen each added 11 points.
The Falcons will learn their national postseason fate on Sunday evening (March 12). The 2023 NCAA DI Women's Basketball Selection Show is Sunday at 8:00 p.m. ET. The WNIT field will be announced later Sunday night, after the NCAA Tournament bracket is released, and the full WNIT bracket will be announced on Monday (March 13).
QUOTING COACH ROBYN FRALICK
"This is obviously really disappointing for us; not our effort, but just in terms of the opportunity we had today. Congratulations to Toledo; they are a really good team, and they played a really good game today. They will represent our conference well in the NCAA Tournament. But, I couldn't be more proud to coach my team."
"That game went about a thousand miles per hour. It was high intensity, and I wish a few more things would have gone our way. But, I'm very proud of our effort and our fight, and I am very proud of the season we have put together."Â
FIRST QUARTER
• The Rockets scored on their first five possessions of the day to take a 12-0 lead. Jocelyn Tate got the Falcons on the board with a driving layup at the 6:04 mark, and Tate would score BGSU's first six points of the afternoon, with a baby hook and a short jumper. But, UT had built a 15-point lead by the time Tate hit her third shot.
• After Justina King split a pair of free throws for the Gold and Blue, though, Elissa Brett knocked down back-to-back three-pointers. She took a Nyla Hampton pass and hit a shot from the left wing. Then, after an Amy Velasco steal, Velasco fed Brett for a transition triple from the right wing, cutting UT's lead to 20-12.
• But, the second Brett bucket, with 2:20 on the clock, was BGSU's last field goal of the quarter. The Rockets got a Jessica Cook hoop and a late free throw to take a 23-12 lead after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• Allison Day made a nifty post move and scored on an up-and-under shot, but UT's Jayda Jansen answered with a three-pointer. Day, however, stepped outside the arc, took a Lexi Fleming pass and hit a triple to cut the UT lead to 26-17. Cook hit a jump shot at the other end, and the only scoring over the next three minutes was a Sammi Mikonowicz free throw.
• Trailing by 12 at the media timeout, the Falcons got a baby hook from Day, and UT's Sophia Wiard immediately threw the ball away. The next possession saw Fleming drive the baseline and find Day for a short jumper that cut the Rocket lead to 39-21.
• A Hampton three-pointer cut the lead to seven, and after the Rockets scored, Hampton found Olivia Hill for a jumper with 21 seconds on the clock, and BGSU got a stop to end the half trailing by seven.
• Day scored nine points in the second period, as BG outscored the Rockets by a 14-10 count.
THIRD QUARTER
• After the Rockets started the game by scoring on five-straight possessions, the BG defense held the U of T without a point for four consecutive possessions to begin the second half. A shot off glass by Day, though, was the only bucket the Falcons could get in that time, and after the margin remained five points for nearly two minutes, UT got a three-point play at the 7:18 mark.
• Tate made an array of moves and scored inside, but Nan Garcia answered with a three-pointer. Tate scored the game's next three points, with a free throw and a contested banker, and a pair of Hampton free throws cut the lead to six, at 41-35, just over midway through the quarter.
• Then, Hill nearly stole the ball, knocking it away from a Toledo player near midcourt and diving out of bounds near the BG bench to save it. The ball wound up with the Rockets, however, and the play ended with an and-one layup by Garcia. Her free throw out of the media timeout gave UT a nine point lead.
• But, Hill made a nifty moved and put a shot off glass and in. Then, she had a steal, and after a BG miss, Mikonowicz grabbed the rebound but was whistled for a foul. After review, an intentional foul was the call, and Brett's two free throws made it a 44-39 game.
• But, Quinesha Lockett scored, and Cook scored with the shot clock winding down, bumping the lead back out to nine points. A Day putback at the buzzer made it a 48-41 game after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• The Rockets scored the first six points of the final quarter, beginning with a pair of Wiard free throws after a foul was called just nine seconds in. Brett drove and lobbed the ball to Sophie Dziekan, who faked a shot, got two would-be defenders in the air and then hit a layup.
• Tate's driving layup answered a Cook bucket, but Lockett threw a runner off glass and in, and she then hit a pair of charity tosses after BG was assessed personal foul number five of the quarter with 5:07 to go. The lead was 60-45, UT's largest of the game at that point, and BG would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way.
• Day hit her second three-pointer of the game, along with a hook shot, and Fleming sandwiched two triples around a Brett layup, but the Rockets were able to pick up the victory.
