THE FALCONS IN THE WNIT
• BGSU is appearing in the postseason WNIT for the eighth time in program history, and the second time in three years. The Falcons enter the Liberty game with an all-time record of 8-8 in the tourney.
• The Falcons are 7-5 in home WNIT games through the years, including a 2-2 mark at venerable Anderson Arena and a 5-3 record at the Stroh Center. BGSU advanced to the third round of the 2013 tournament and the fourth round of the 2014 WNIT, losing to the eventual champion each season (Drexel in '13; Rutgers in '14).
• BGSU is 0-1 in road games and 1-2 in neutral-site contests in WNIT play over the years.
NOW THAT'S A TURNAROUND!
• The Falcons went 19-42 overall and 5-31 in MAC play in head coach Robyn Fralick's first two seasons at the helm, as she and her staff were recruiting the bulk of the current team and implementing their culture and style of play.
• It's safe to say that Fralick and her staff were successful. Over the last two-plus years, the Falcons are 65-30 overall and 38-18 in league regular-season action. BGSU has qualified for national postseason play in each of the last three seasons.
TWENTY SEVEN WINS
• The Falcons' 70-61 win over Ball State in Friday's (March 10) MAC Tournament semifinal-round game was BGSU's 27th victory of the season. The current team is the 12th in program history to win at least 25 contests, and the first since 2013-14 (the complete list of BGSU's year-by-year records is on page 38).
• BGSU has now had a total of nine seasons with 27 or more wins in program history. All 11 of the other MAC schools have combined for just 10 such seasons.
WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE
• The Falcons have won the turnover battle more often than not – MUCH more often than not – this season. BGSU has committed fewer turnovers than the opponents in 30 of this season's 33 games.
• The Falcons forced the opposition into 20 or more turnovers in 12 of the 18 MAC regular-season contests. BGSU has had a turnover margin of +10 or better in 15 games, with a +9 margin in six additional games.
• Entering the Liberty game, the Falcons are ranked second in the entire nation in turnover margin (+8.88), and BGSU is seventh in the country in turnovers forced per game (21.39) and eighth in assist/turnover ratio (1.36).
• BGSU has forced the opposition into at least 15 turnovers in 31 of the 33 games, and the Falcons have had a single-digit turnover total 10 times this season to date.
• And, BG has turned those opponent turnovers into buckets. Through 33 games, the Falcons have outscored the foes, 750-334, in points off turnovers – an average of 22.73 points for, and just 10.12 points against, per game. We break it down scientifically in a handy chart on page 10. As always, trust the science.
HAMPTON = DEFENSE
• There's a reason Nyla Hampton was named the MAC's Defensive Player of the Year. In fact, there are at least 95 reasons.
• Hampton had 86 steals last season, the fourth-highest total in BGSU history at the time (spoiler alert: it's now the fifth highest total). She ranked second in the MAC and 17th in the nation in that category in 2021-22. With 2.69 steals per game, Hampton was third in the league and 23rd in the country.
• This season, Hampton has 95 steals, a new school single-season record. In the MAC Tournament quarterfinal-round win over Eastern Michigan, she broke a record that had stood for nearly three decades, as Talita Scott had set the mark with 92 steals in 1993-94.
• Hampton now has two of the top-five single-season totals in program annals. She currently ranks eighth in the nation in total steals and 14th in the country in steals per game (2.88). She leads the MAC in both categories.
• Hampton is on pace to shatter the school records for total steals and steals per game in a career. She has 237 steals in 89 career games played. In just her third year with the Falcons, she has moved into third place on the BGSU career steals list. Hampton needs four steals to tie Lori Albers (241 steals from 1989-94) for second place, and seven to match Lindsay Austin's (244 from 2000-04) school record.
• Hampton's average of 2.66 career steals per game puts her on pace to obliterate that school record – no other Falcon has had more than 2.19 career spg. All of the aforementioned lists are on page 8.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE FLAMES
• Liberty is 24-8 on the season, and the Flames went 16-2 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Like BGSU, Liberty advanced to the championship game of the conference tournament before falling to the number-one seed. The Flames saw a 16-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday.
• Individually, Mya Berkman leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, with 14.7 ppg and 8.3 rpg. Berkman, who was named to the All-ASUN First Team for the second year in a row, leads the entire nation in field-goal percentage, at 69.9%. Five of her teammates are averaging between 6.9 and 8.3 ppg, including Emma Hess (8.3 ppg), who has hit a team-leading 60 three-point field goals.
• Head coach Carey Green's team is 14-1 at home, 9-5 on the road and 1-2 in neutral-site games this season. In conference play, Liberty went a perfect 9-0 at home and 7-2 on the road. Green welcomed back 10 letterwinners, including three starters, from a 2021-22 club that went 28-5 overall and 14-2 in the ASUN.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons trail Liberty, 1-0, in the all-time series, and the lone meeting came last season on a neutral court. The Flames picked up a 76-72 win (Nov. 28, 2021) at the Navy Classic in Annapolis, Md. Elissa Brett had 17 points in that game, while Jocelyn Tate added 15 and Morgan Sharps 12.
DOWN THE ROAD
• The BGSU-Liberty winner will advance to the second round of the WNIT, and will face either Green Bay or Niagara. The date, time and location of that second-round game will be determined following the conclusion of the teams' first-round games.
