Falcon Throwers Exceed Seeds on First Day of NCAA Regionals

Neal finishes 17th in shot put, Haintz places 29th in hammer throw
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Bowling Green Falcons opened competition at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regional on Thursday, May 25, with throwers Mateya Haintz and Zaresha Neal competing for the Orange and Brown. Haintz entered as the No. 32 seed in the hammer throw and recorded a mark of 188-11.00 (57.59m) to finish 29th. Neal entered as the No. 23 seed in the shot put and recorded a mark of 53-9.75 (16.40m) to finish 17th. Each athlete competed in a field of 48 at Jax Track at Hodges Stadium.

The Falcons have a day off, then will conclude competition at the NCAA East Regional on Saturday, May 27. Zaresha Neal will begin the day for the Orange and Brown, throwing at the 12th spot in the second flight of the discus, which starts at 1 p.m. ET. In the evening, Brianna Richard will compete at the second position in the third flight of the triple jump, which begins at 6 p.m. ET. If either athlete finishes in the top 12, they will earn a spot at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship, held on June 8 and 10 in Austin, Texas.

- Zaresha Neal recorded her second-best shot put mark of the season at 53-9.75 (16.40m). ). This is the fourth-best shot put mark recorded by a BGSU athlete at an NCAA Regional.
- Neal's mark is the 17th-best in school history. She concludes her career with 10 of the top 21 shot put marks in program history.
- She outperformed her seed by six spots, extending her streak of beating her seed in the shot put to three consecutive seasons. Her 17th-place finish in the event is the second-best of her NCAA Regional career, with her mark also ranking second.
- Haintz recorded her fourth-best hammer throw mark of the season at 188-11.00 (57.59m). This is the eighth-best hammer throw mark recorded by a BGSU athlete at an NCAA Regional.
- Haintz outperformed her seed by three spots, improving from her 2021 NCAA Regional performance that saw her place below her seed.
- She also bested her mark from the 2021 regional, which was 184-10.00 (56.35m).
- The Falcons have now equaled or exceeded their seed on 35-of-44 occasions (79.5 percent) under head coach Lou Snelling, who began in 2011-12.
