Men Look to Jumpstart Season in Louisville
The mens' squad looks to land in a favorable position this weekend as the team heads down to Louisville to take on a plethora of talented teams at the Louisville Classic.
The team has been led by Heriberto Alvarez so far this season with the senior placing first among the Falcons at both meets in the 2023 campaign. Alvarez set a personal record 6k time of 19:20.8 this season at the Tommy Evans Invitational on Sept. 1. The Illinois native will be competing in an 8k race this time around, where he holds a personal record of 25:20.2 that was recorded at the 2022 Paul Short Run. Bowling Green head coach Lou Snelling was optimistic of Alavrez's future following the Mel Brodt Open on Sept. 15. "There will be a point this season, fitness wise, where he will have enough in the tank to keep things more in check" said Snelling.
Women Prepare for Top Level Talent at Paul Short
The womens' team will take part in the Paul Short Run where the team will look to get back to their winning ways that they saw early in the season by winning the Tommy Evans Invitational. That race saw two Falcons in Kailee Perry and Kylee Cubbison finish first and second, respectively, in the entire field. The Falcons would go on to win that race outright, topping Ohio University by double digits.
The team will look towards Perry and Cubbison to lead the Falcons once again when they face a field that will consist of several nationally ranked opponents. In both races in the 2023 campaign, Perry and Cubbison have been the first two Falcons to cross the finish line. The team saw fifth year Kailee Perry win the Tommy Evans Invitational with Cubbison finishing in second. Cubbison would then be the first Falcon to finish at the Mel Brodt Open, placing 13th, and Perry finishing closely behind in 23rd.
The Falcons also look forward to returning to the Paul Short Run this year following the team performance last year. Seven Falcons set a personal record at last year's Paul Short Run in Kailee Perry, Kylee Cubbison, Elise Johnson, Izzy Best, Regina Rose, Emma Hellwege, and Raegan Burkey. All seven Falcons that set a personal record did so with an improvement of at least ten seconds.
A Look at the Competition
The men will face high caliber teams at the Louisville Classic this weekend in a field of over 50 schools. The field will consist of schools from across the Midwest region, including a few MAC schools.
The women will face a field of 44 teams at the Paul Short Run this weekend. Within the 44 team field the Falcons will face two nationally ranked teams in Georgetown (#11) and Utah Valley (#24). In addition to the nationally ranked opponents the Falcons will also see regionally ranked teams within their race with schools like West Virginia (#2, Mid-Atlantic), Penn State (#4, Mid-Atlantic), Navy (#7, Mid-Atlantic), and Bucknell (#8, Mid-Atlantic) are among the top teams competing in the field.
