MORE LIKE VELA-SCORE, AMIRITE?
• Junior Amy Velasco exploded for a career-high 32 points in the Falcons' 82-73 win at Northern Illinois on Saturday (Feb. 24). It was the highest single-game point total by a BGSU player in nearly four years.
• No Falcon had scored as many points since Caterrion Thompson had a 32-point game vs. Kent State on Feb. 29, 2020. And, no Falcon has scored more points since Angela Perry had 36 against California Baptist on Nov. 30, 2019.
LAST TIME OUT: FALCONS TOP NIU FOR SECOND-STRAIGHT ROAD WIN
• Amy Velasco scored 15 of her career-high 32 points in the fourth quarter alone on Saturday (Feb. 24), as the Falcons picked up a second-straight road win. BGSU downed Northern Illinois, 82-73, at the Convocation Center.
• Velasco paced four double-digit scorers for the Falcons (14-11, 8-6 MAC), as Paige Kohler had 17 points, Morgan Sharps 15 and Erika Porter 11.
• In addition to points, Velasco also had a career-high steals total, with six. Kohler had a game-high seven assists to tie her career best.
• Velasco, as mentioned, had 15 points in the fourth quarter alone. In that final period, Velasco was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field while going 6-of-6 at the free-throw line.
• For the Huskies (13-13, 6-8 MAC), Jayden Marable had 15 points, while Brooke Stonebraker and Sidney McCrea scored 13 apiece.
• The Falcons shot an even 50 percent from the field for the second consecutive game, and BGSU had advantages of 19-8 in point off turnovers and 30-24 in points in the paint.
• The Huskies went 5-for-7 from three-point range in the first quarter, taking a 20-19 lead after 10 minutes of action. But, the Falcons limited NIU to just a 2-of-11 effort from the arc over the final three quarters.
• BGSU led by as many as seven points on two occasions in the first quarter, but the hosts ended the period on a 10-2 run to take the lead. That NIU advantage grew to five points several times in the second quarter, but a Velasco layup was followed by back-to-back three-pointers from Sharps as the 8-0 run gave the Falcons the lead.
• NIU battled back, and a Marable layup gave the hosts a 38-37 lead with 2:12 left in the half, but Velasco knocked down a long-distance shot to give BG the lead, and the Falcons never trailed again.
• Stonebraker's jumper tied the contest midway through the third quarter, but Sharps answered with a triple, and Kohler had a personal 6-0 run that gave BG a 52-45 lead. Northern crept as close as four points, but could not make it a one-possession game over the last 15 minutes of the contest.
A MILESTONE FOR MORGAN: SHARPS SURPASSES THE 1,000-POINT MARK
• Morgan Sharps reached a career milestone last Wednesday night (Feb. 21), surpassing the 1,000-point plateau in the Falcons' win at Akron. Sharps had 15 points vs. the Zips, including a three-point field goal in the last minute of the first quarter that put her past the millennium mark.
• Sharps, a transfer from Xavier, scored 222 points with the Musketeers prior to coming to BGSU. After scoring 15 more points on Saturday at NIU, she now has 803 points in 71 games as Falcons, an average of 11.3 points per game. She enters the UB contest with a total of 1,025 points in her college career.
AND DON'T LOOK NOW, BUT AMY'S APPROACHING A THOUSAND, TOO
• After her 32-point game at NIU, Amy Velasco now has a total of 960 points as a Falcon, and is (obviously) 40 points away from reaching the 1,000-point mark.
• Velasco has 372 points and 41 three-point field goals made – the highest totals of her BGSU career to date – this season.
SHARPS SHOOTER: MORGAN NOW TIED FOR SEVENTH AT BGSU
• Morgan Sharps made four three-point field goals in the win at Akron, giving her 173 triples in her BGSU career. Sharps has moved into a tie for seventh place on that Falcon career list, equaling the total amassed by her former teammate, Elissa Brett.
• Sharps has played in 71 games at BGSU. Every player above her on the career list for three-point field goals made played in at least 118 career contests.
• Sharps is on pace to break the school record for three-point field goals made per game in a career. She has hit 2.49 triples per contest as a Falcon, ahead of the legendary Lauren Prochaska, who made 2.30 treys per game in her Hall of Fame career.
• This season, Sharps has made 3.05 three-pointers per game, and ranks seventh in the nation in that category.
THE FALCONS – A QUICK OVERVIEW
• The Falcons have an overall record of 14-11 on the season, and BGSU is 8-6 in MAC play heading into Wednesday's Buffalo game. BG posted a pair of road wins last week, topping Akron (74-68; Feb. 21) and Northern Illinois (82-73; Feb. 24).
• The Falcons are tied for fourth place (with Buffalo) in the MAC standings.
• BGSU is 7-4 at home, 5-7 on the road and 2-0 in neutral-site games. In MAC play, the Falcons are 5-2 at the Stroh and 3-4 in front of hostile gatherings.
• The Falcons rallied to beat Cleveland State in the season opener, and after a loss at Texas State, BG bounced back with four-straight wins, downing Xavier, Mercer, Lehigh and Duquesne. The latter game saw the Falcons win, 68-66, on Amy Velasco's buzzer-beater at the Stroh.
• BGSU went 1-3 in December, with all three losses coming to nationally-ranked teams (#4/4 Iowa, #1/1 South Carolina and #16/15 Indiana).
• The Falcons went 3-0 to begin the MAC schedule, sweeping the league's three Michigan members. BGSU lost for the first time in conference play on Jan. 13, falling at Ball State by a 76-61 count. The Falcons bounced back with a 70-59 home win over Akron (Jan. 17), and BG snapped a three-game losing streak with a 72-54 win over Northern Illinois (Jan. 31), before falling at Toledo (Feb. 3).
• The Orange and Brown topped Ohio, 69-52, at the Stroh (Feb. 7), and after losses to Troy and UT, BGSU completed season sweeps of both UA and NIU.
• A total of 13 Falcons have seen action this season, but only eight of the 14 players who began the season on the roster suited up for the Troy game (and the next three contests). Nine different players have started at least one game so far in 2023-24.
• Velasco, a junior, leads the team with 35.0 minutes per game, while freshman Paige Kohler has played 33.2 mpg.
• Fourth-year Falcon Lexi Fleming, one of the many injured Falcons, averaged 31.4 mpg over the first 10 contests of the season, before leaving the Indiana game (Dec. 22). Fleming also has averages of 15.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game, and led the Falcons in all three categories at the time of her injury. She was averaging 16.7 ppg prior to that IU game, in which she played just 1:10.
• Morgan Sharps and Velasco have scored 15.0 and 14.9 ppg, respectively. Erika Porter has 11.4 ppg, while Kohler is right behind at 11.1 ppg. Sharps (five), Porter (five), Velasco (four) and Kohler (three) each have had multiple games with 20 or more points this season (as has Fleming [three]), and Porter has four double-doubles on the year.
• Sharps, who had a career-high 30 points vs. Kent State in late January, scored 28 points against Troy, tying the school record with eight three-pointers made in the latter game. She has made 20 triples in the last four contests, and is averaging 19.8 ppg over the Falcons' last eight games.
• Velasco paces BG with 4.8 assists per game, followed by Kohler (3.5 apg).
• Velasco has gone 41-of-95 (43.2%) from the arc to lead the Falcons in three-point accuracy, while Sharps, despite missing the first four games of the season, tops the team in triples made, having made 64-of-165 shots (38.8%) from long distance.
• Porter is shooting a team-leading 65.3% from the field, having made 115 of her 176 total shot attempts, and she leads the team in rebounding, at 6.0 rpg. Velasco, Sharps and Porter all have made between 115 and 124 field goals this season.
• Olivia Hill and Sophie Dziekan have 4.8 and 3.3 ppg, respectively, this season. Hill has started 23 of the Falcons' 25 games this winter, and after going 0-for-1 from three-point land in her first three seasons (plus two games) as a Falcon, has shown her proclivity from the arc by going 14-for-41 from downtown this season to date.
• Dziekan made her first collegiate start at Wright State (Dec. 12) and responded with her first career double-double, as she had 12 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in the win. She has made five starts this season, including a pair of MAC matchups, and is shooting just under 60% from the field.
• BGSU's scoring in MAC games could hardly be any more balanced, as Velasco has 16.0 ppg, followed by Sharps (14.4 ppg), Porter (13.8 ppg) and Kohler (13.5 ppg). That quartet ranks fourth, eighth, ninth and 11th, respectively, in the MAC in scoring. Porter has a team-high 7.9 rebounds per game in MAC action, with four double-doubles in conference play.
• Velasco leads the Falcons in assists (5.3 apg; good for first in the MAC) and steals (1.8 spg) in MAC games, while Porter is shooting a team- and MAC-best 67.0% (75-of-112) from the floor.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE BULLS
• Buffalo enters Wednesday's game with a 15-10 overall record this season, and the Bulls are 8-6 in the MAC, good for a tie for fourth place in the league. UB picked up a 67-54 win over Ohio on Saturday. The Bulls are 11-4 at home and 4-6 on the road this season. In MAC action, Buffalo is 4-3 at home and 4-3 on the road.
• Individually, Chellia Watson leads the team – and ranks seventh in the nation – in scoring, with 23.2 ppg, while Kirsten Lewis-Williams joins her in double figures with 11.8 ppg.
• Head coach Becky Burke and the Bulls already have topped last season's overall and MAC win totals, despite returning just two letterwinners. That 2022-23 club finished 12-16 overall and 7-11 in conference action.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Buffalo, 28-23, in the all-time series, but UB has won the last two meetings, including an 82-72 win in Western New York last month (Jan. 24, 2024). Chellia Watson had 36 points in that game. Last season, the teams split their two matchups. BGSU picked up a narrow 64-61 road win (Jan. 25, 2023), but the Bulls defeated the Falcons, 84-66, at the Stroh Center exactly one month later. UB has won four of the last five meetings and 18 of the last 22 contests since a BGSU 20-game series win streak from 2004-14.
• The Falcons are 12-10 at home, 14-13 on the road and 2-0 at neutral sites vs. UB through the years.
