• The BGSU softball team opens both the home and conference portions of the schedule this weekend. Head coach Candace Fenton-Bockbrader and the Falcons are set to host Buffalo in a three-game Mid-American Conference series. The teams will play a Friday (March 15) single game, beginning at 3:00 p.m., followed by a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday (March 16) at Meserve Field. Admission is free to all of BGSU's home games.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will head across the state for a Tuesday (March 19) twinbill at Youngstown State. First pitch of game one is set for 3:00 p.m. at the YSU Softball Complex.
• BGSU is coming off of a narrow 10-9 loss at Notre Dame on Tuesday (March 12). The Falcons posted a season-high run total against the Fighting Irish, battling into extra innings on the road. BG trailed, 8-2, after Notre Dame put together a five-run third inning, but the Falcons exploded for a seven-run fourth inning to take the lead. The Irish evened things up with a seventh-inning homer, then scratched an eighth-inning run across the plate to pick up the win.
• The Falcons began the 2024 campaign by going 1-3 at the Battle at the Beach (Feb. 24-25), hosted by Coastal Carolina. BGSU split a pair of games with Furman, including a 7-3 win in the Falcons' season opener, and also faced Louisville and CCU.
• On the opening weekend of March (March 1-3), BG dropped four games at the Hoosier Classic, facing Valparaiso and host Indiana. The Falcons have seen the schedule change many, many times due to inclement weather, but BGSU has played doubleheaders at Morehead State (March 7) and Notre Dame, sandwiched around games vs. Illinois State and Michigan at the NKU Spring Classic on Sunday (March 10).
• A total of 22 different players have seen action this season to date, including all nine newcomers who are eligible to play (one of BGSU's 10 newbies will redshirt the 2024 season).
• Senior Reagan Williamson is hitting a team-leading .385 on the season, and also paces the Falcons in hits (15), doubles, homers, RBI, total bases, walks, on-base percentage and slugging pct.
• Lexi Carver is hitting .250, while Marti Henkel is batting .238. Henkel reached base in all four plate appearances in the second Notre Dame game, doing 2-for-2 with a pair of walks. Freshman Cameron Kaufman and senior Peyton Dolejs are hitting .235 and .205, respectively. Dolejs, the only Falcon other than Williamson to start all 14 games, is second on the team with eight RBI.
• In the circle, six different Falcons have seen action this season. Taylor Turner, a transfer from Miami University, leads the Orange and Brown in appearances (10), starts (6) and complete games (3). She has an opponent batting average of .298.
• Freshman Emma Denison has a team-low 4.40 ERA. Her two collegiate starts have come against Michigan and Notre Dame. Scarlet Anderson is second on the Falcons in appearances and games started in the circle, while Mackenzie Krafcik had a solid relief stint against the Fighting Irish, in just her third appearance of the season.
• Buffalo enters Friday's MAC opener with an overall record of 8-11 after splitting four games at the Hail Southern Classic, hosted by Georgia Southern, last weekend. Alexis Lucyshyn leads the team with a .356 batting average, also pacing the club with 13 RBI. And, Lucyshyn leads the UB pitching staff as well, as she is 5-4 with 77 strikeouts and a 1.67 ERA. Head coach Mike Ruechel's club went 14-36 overall and 8-18 in the MAC last season, and UB returned 14 of 17 letterwinners from that 2023 club.
• Youngstown State is 11-10 heading into this weekend's Horizon League-opening series with Detroit Mercy. The Penguins split a Tuesday twinbill against Akron before dropping a narrow 2-1 decision at Kent State on Wednesday. Ashlyn Bishop is hitting .300 and is one of four players batting at least .271 on the year. In the circle, Sophie Howell is 7-4 with a 2.02 ERA. She has pitched eight complete games in her 10 starts, and has allowed opponents to bat just .227 against her. Coach Brian Campbell's club went 27-27 overall and 12-10 in Horizon League play last spring.
• The Falcons lead Buffalo, 31-21, but the Bulls swept a three-game series in Western New York last season. In UB's last trip to Meserve Field, the Falcons took two of three games in a 2022 series, with two of those games requiring extra innings.
• BGSU trails Youngstown State, 7-3, in that series, but the teams have not met since 2013. That year, the Falcons picked up a narrow 1-0 victory in a tourney hosted by Kennesaw State. Prior to 2013, the teams had not met since 1987, and Tuesday will mark the Falcons' first games vs. YSU in Youngstown since 1984.
• Following the Youngstown State DH, the Falcons will return home for a three-game series vs. Toledo at Meserve Field. The teams will play a Friday (March 22) single game followed by a Saturday (March 23) doubleheader.
