UP NEXT IN FALCON SOFTBALL
• BGSU vs. Detroit Mercy • March 30 (DH) • 12:00 p.m. • Bowling Green, Ohio •
• BGSU at Miami • April 2 (DH) • 3:00 p.m. • Oxford, Ohio •
• The BGSU softball team wraps up a season-long eight-game homestand this weekend, stepping outside of Mid-American Conference play for a Saturday (March 30) doubleheader. Head coach Candace Fenton-Bockbrader and the Falcons face the University of Detroit Mercy, with the first pitch of game one set for 12:00 p.m. at Meserve Field.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will return to MAC action with a Tuesday (April 2) twinbill against defending league champion Miami University. That doubleheader will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Miami Softball Stadium.
SINCE THE LAST TIME WE TALKED...
• BGSU played three games at home last weekend, dropping a series to arch-rival Toledo. Aaralyn Nogay reached base three times in the opener, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a triple. Peyton Dolejs had two hits and drove in two runs. Nogay and Dolejs had back-to-back triples in the first inning of that game, an 8-3 UT win.
• Nogay continued that hot hitting in the next game, going 3-for-4 and driving in three runs in Saturday's first game. Wynnie Reid had two hits and scored two runs, while Mackenna Fry walked and singled.
NIFTY NOTES AND NUMBERS: NOGAY'S HOT HITTING VS. THE ROCKETS
• Freshman Aaralyn Nogay hit .556 in last weekend's Toledo series, including a 5-for-7 effort in the first two games vs. the Rockets. In the opener, Nogay was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk. Then, in the next game, she went 3-for-4 with bases-loaded, bases-clearing double.
• In the series, Nogay had the first double, the first triple and the first three runs batted in of her young Falcon career. She raised her season batting average 141 points in the three games.
ALSO NOTEWORTHY: RUNNING WITH THE FALCONS
• It's safe to say the Falcons are running more in 2024 than in '23. BGSU had a total of 10 stolen bases in the Buffalo series (March 15-16), including seven in the middle game.
• BGSU single-game records are incomplete, but BGSU's seven stolen bases in the first game on Saturday was the program's highest single-game total since at least the 2000 season.
• Heading into the Detroit Mercy twinbill, the Falcons have a total of 26 steals in this season's first 20 games. Last year, the Falcons stole a total of 16 bases in 50 games.
THIS SEASON TO DATE...
• The Falcons are 2-18 overall, and BGSU is 1-5 in the MAC this season to date. A total of 23 different players have seen action this season, including all nine newcomers who are eligible to play (one of BGSU's 10 newbies will redshirt the 2024 season).
• Senior Reagan Williamson is hitting a team-leading .293 on the season, and also paces the Falcons in hits (17), doubles (four), homers (two), RBI (10), total bases and slugging pct.
• Freshman Cameron Kaufman is batting .279 on the year, while sophomore Marti Henkel is hitting .257 this season to date. Kaufman and senior Peyton Dolejs each have 12 hits, tied for second on the team behind Williamson. Dolejs is second on the club with three extra-base hits.
• In the circle, six different Falcons have seen action this season. Freshman Emma Denison leads BGSU with a 4.74 ERA, while senior Taylor Turner has a 6.04 ERA. Turner leads the staff in appearances (14) and games started (seven), as well as innings pitched and strikeouts.
• Scarlet Anderson has made six starts and nine appearances overall to rank second on the team in both categories. Mackenzie Krafcik, Alivia Roth and Madi Young all have pitched in at least five games this season to date.
• Fenton-Bockbrader and assistant coaches Erinn Gankosky and Jacob Jeffries are joined by 14 returning letterwinners from last year's club. That list includes seniors Williamson and Peyton Dolejs, each of whom have started over 100 career games.
THE OPPONENT / THE SERIES
• Detroit is 1-20 on the season, and the Titans are looking to snap an eight-game losing streak. Alison Donaugh is hitting a team-leading .326 this spring, with Trinity Fessler batting .273 and Amanda Schick .240. In the circle, Jordan Kavanaugh has made a team-high 10 starts, while Olivia Warrington has started eight contests. First-year coach Dan Vitale was joined by nine returning players from last year's team that went 4-34 overall and 3-20 in the Horizon League.
• Miami is 23-6 overall, and the RedHawks are 6-0 in the MAC heading into a three-game weekend series at Buffalo. MU has won 10-straight games after a 10-6 victory at Pittsburgh on Wednesday, and the RedHawks are 7-0 at home heading into the BG series. Seven MU starters are hitting .345 or better, led by Jenna Golembiewski's .489 average. Karli Spaid has 20 homers and Golembiewski 19, as MU has hit a national-best 83 as a team. Spaid and Golembiewski rank 1-2 in the nation in that category among individuals. In the circle, Addy Jarvis is 9-1 with a 4.12 ERA, while Madilyn Reeves has an 8-2 record and a 4.16 ERA. Last year, the 'Hawks went 39-20 overall and 21-8 in the league, winning the MAC regular-season and tournament titles.
• The Falcons lead Detroit Mercy, 46-10, in the all-time series. The teams met last season, with BGSU picking up a 3-2 win on opening day (Feb. 10, 2023) at the DePaul Dome Tournament. The Titans' last visit to Meserve Field saw the Falcons sweep a twinbill by scores of 3-0 and 6-4 (April 12, 2022).
• BGSU trails Miami, 65-57, in that series. Last year, the RedHawks swept the Orange and Brown in a three-game series at Meserve Field (April 11-12, 2023). The teams played five games in Oxford the previous season. BGSU won the opener of the three-game regular-season series, taking a 4-2 decision as Peyton Dolejs hit a two-out grand slam in the seventh inning (April 19, 2022). But, MU took the final two games of that series, then captured a pair of contests vs. BGSU in the MAC Tournament several weeks later.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the midweek matchup at Miami, the Falcons will play games at Meserve Field for the fourth-straight weekend, as Akron will come to town for a three-game series. The Falcons and Zips will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 6, and a single game the following day.
