BGSU to meet Akron this weekend at Meserve Field
OXFORD, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team dropped a pair of games against Mid-American Conference-leading Miami University on Tuesday (April 2). The RedHawks picked up wins by scores of 10-0 and 9-0 at Miami Softball Stadium.
On Tuesday, Miami (28-6, 11-0 MAC) did what the RedHawks have done all season. MU entered the game leading the nation in scoring (9.31), home runs per game (2.84) and slugging percentage (.745), while also ranking among the top-five teams in the country in on-base pct. (.460; third), walks (155; fourth) and batting average (.360; fifth).
Two RedHawks, Jenna Golembiewski and Karli Spaid, entered the game tied for the national lead in homers, with 22 apiece.
In game one, BGSU pitcher Mackenzie Krafcik allowed just two hits through four innings and four hits in the first five frames, before the hosts broke the game open in the sixth.
The nightcap saw the RedHawks score a run in the second and four more in the third to take control.
BGSU-MIAMI GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The RedHawks took the lead with an unearned run, without benefit of a hit, in the first inning. A hit batter was followed by a two-out catcher's interference call, putting two runners aboard with two down. Back-to-back walks gave the hosts a 1-0 lead.
• In the second inning, Reagan Bartholomew led off with a homer to right center, before BGSU starter Mackenzie Krafcik set down the next three hitters.
• As the Falcons took the field for the bottom of the third inning, the game was halted due to lightning in the vicinity. When play resumed just over a half-hour later, Krafcik and the BG defense held the RedHawks off of the scoreboard in the third. The hosts worked a pair of walks in the inning, but Peyton Dolejs made a nice running catch of a Sami Bewick fly ball to shallow left-center, and Krafcik got Chloe Parks to hit a ground ball to Cameron Kaufman at short that ended the inning.
• Miami added to the lead, however, with an unearned run in the fourth. An error put the leadoff hitter aboard, and a bunt single by Hadley Parisien – just the RedHawks' second hit of the game – put runners at the corners. Krafcik proceeded to strike out Allie Cummins for the second time in the game, but Jenna Golembiewski lifted a fly ball to center that allowed Bartholomew to tag and score from third.
• The nation's top-hitting team had just two hits in the first four innings, before picking up two more hits in the fifth. Kate Kobayashi homered with one out, and Bewick followed with a double. A hit batter and a walk loaded the bases, and a run would score on a ground ball to the right side by Parisien.
• After getting just four hits through five innings, though, the RedHawks exploded in the sixth. Golembiewski and Karli Spaid, who entered the day tied for the national lead in homers, went back-to-back to begin the inning. The next two hitters were retired, but after singles by Bewick and Parks, Bartholomew ended the contest with a three-run homer.
• Meanwhile, Madilyn Reeves kept the Falcons off the scoreboard. She walked Aaralyn Nogay in both the first and third innings, and issued a free pass to Marti Henkel i the second, but avoided damage on each occasion. In the second, Ashley Chevalier gave a ball a ride, but it was tracked down in right center.
• In the third, a hard-hit ball by Dolejs momentarily seemed like it would go up the middle, but shortstop Bartholomew grabbed it and was able to step on second before firing to first.
• Bartholomew made a leaping catch of Lexi Carver's line drive to begin the fourth inning, before Kaufman's drive was caught in right-center.
• Reeves walked three batters and struck out three for the RedHawks. At the plate, both Bewick and Bartholomew had two hits, with Bartholomew driving in four runs.
• Nogay walked twice and Henkel once for the Falcons in the opener.
BGSU-MIAMI GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• BGSU starter Emma Denison kept the RedHawks off of the scoreboard in the first inning, but Miami took the lead on a Bartholomew homer with two outs in the second.Â
• In the third, first baseman Carver made a nice catch of a Cummins popup in foul ground, but Golembiewski followed with a homer. After a walk to Spaid and a Holly Blaska single, Denison struck out Kobayashi, but Bewick followed with a double, and after an infield hit, Bartholomew doubled to cap the four-run inning.
• Ellie Price made her 2023 season debut in the circle and needed just one pitch to get out of the inning, on a Cummins ground ball to short.
• The RedHawks increased the lead in the fourth, on a two-run homer by Kobayashi. Then, in the fifth, after a walk to Golembiewski with one out, Blaska homered with two down to give the hosts the win.
• For the Falcons, Henkel walked twice, with Wynnie Reid drawing a walk and Taylor Behrendt picking up a fourth-inning single.
• Four players had two hits apiece for the hosts, with four RedHawks driving in two runs each. In the circle, Ashley Hitchcock earned the win, walking three and striking out one.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons will return to Meserve Field for a three-game series vs. Akron on "Eclipse the Zips" weekend. The teams will meet in a Saturday (April 6) doubleheader, beginning at 1:00 p.m., with a Sunday (April 7) single game set to start at 12:00 p.m.
• Saturday is "Professor at the Park" Day at the field.
