Second-Half Goal Lifts Loyola Past Falcons
September 01, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CHICAGO, Ill. – A goal off of a rebound in the second half was the difference on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 1), as Loyola University Chicago downed the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, 1-0. The non-conference matchup was held at Loyola Soccer Park.
Taylor Harrison scored the game's lone goal for the Ramblers (3-1-1), in the 56th minute. Zoe Hevey played a diagonal ball into the box from the right side. With the ball headed toward the far post, BGSU goalkeeper Madison Vukas made a diving effort to knock the ball away. The rebound, however, deflected off of Harrison, and she was able to knock it into the vacated net for what would prove to be the winner.
Vukas had six saves, tying her career high, in the match for the Falcons (2-2).
HOW IT HAPPENED – HIGHLIGHTS
• 8' | BGSU worked the ball down the right side of the pitch. Michelle Hochstadt slid a pass to Brynn Gardner, who laid the ball off to Regan Reilly. Reilly, making her first collegiate start, took a touch and hit a shot, but the ball went wide left.
• 12' | BGSU looked to create a chance off of a corner kick, as Lilly Boebel played the ball to Hochstadt on the left side of the box, but a pair of defenders converged on Hochstadt before she was able to get a cross or a shot off.
• 17' | BGSU had a chance as Brynn Gardner put Emma Stransky past the Loyola defense. Stransky made a move to get around Loyola 'keeper Allison Deardorff, but the striker stumbled as she got past Deardorff and looked to shoot, and the resulting effort was blocked by a defender.
• 18' | Stransky another chance one minute later, getting on the end of Boebel's left-side cross. Stransky volleyball the ball out of the air, but the one-timer whizzed just over the net.
• 26' | BGSU goalkeeper Madison Vukas made a save on a shot by Taylor Harrison, after the ball was deflected to Harrison following a corner kick
• 32' | After a low entry ball from the left side, Brynn Gardner got a foot on the ball at near post before Deardorff could get there, but Gardner's shot went just wide left.
• 35' | Vukas parried a hard shot by Kenedi Jones from near the 18, then grabbed the rebound before another Loyola player could arrive.
• 37' | The BGSU 'keeper made a save on Jocelyn Leigh, who put a header on frame after a diagonal ball came into the box.
• 39' | With just under six minutes remaining in the half, the Ramblers thought they had taken the lead, but the assistant referee's flag was up, and the match remained scoreless due to the offside call.
• 53' | Stransky ran onto a through ball on the right side, but her resulting cross/shot rolled just wide of the far post.
• 55' | Jaimee Cibulka hit a shot from distance, but Vukas grabbed the hard shot, with a Loyola player nearby, waiting for a rebound that never came.
• 56' | Harrison gave the Ramblers the lead in the 56th minute. Vukas parried a short crossing ball away from the far post, but it went directly to Harrison, who knocked it home.
• 62' | After Stransky was fouled, leading to a yellow card on the Ramblers, Hochstadt's ensuing free kick from near midfield was snared by the 'keeper.
• 82' | Taylor Green was fouled, and a long free kick by Emme Butera sailed into the penalty area. Deardorff fumbled the ball initially, but grabbed the rebound in traffic.
