BGSU'S MAC TOURNAMENT SCENARIOS
Overview
**In these scenarios, all MAC matches would need to be finalized for the final KPI rankings to determine the tiebreakers. The KPI rankings can be found at the Faktorsports.com link in the MAC provided explanation above.Â
Overview
- Entering the final day of the MAC regular season for volleyball (Nov. 15), there are still three spots up for grabs in the MAC Tournament with four teams fighting for a spot.Â
- Clinched Teams: Ball State, Western Michigan, Ohio
- Teams In The Hunt: Toledo (10-7), Miami (OH) (10-7), Bowling Green (9-8), Akron (9-8)
- Saturday Matchups:
- Toledo (10-7) vs. Akron (9-8) -- 4 p.m. -- Akron, Ohio
- Miami (OH) (10-7) vs. Eastern Michigan (4-13) -- 4 p.m. -- Oxford, Ohio
- Bowling Green (9-8) vs. Buffalo (6-11) -- 4 p.m. -- Buffalo, N.Y.
- Teams will be seeded 1 through 6 based on conference winning percentage (MAC play only).Â
- Ties in the conference standings shall be broken as follows:
- Two Team Tiebreaker:
- Head-to-Head Winning Percentage
- KPI Conference Rankings (Faktorsports.com)
- Multiple (3 or more) Team Tiebreaker:
- Total won-lost record of matches played among the tied teams (winning percentage)
- KPI Conference Rankings (Faktorsports.com)
- Two Team Tiebreaker:
- Note: If a three-team tie is reduced to two teams, the Two-Team Tiebreaker goes into effect.
- Winning percentage is used instead of record because of situations where teams do not play each other the same number of times.Â
- Therefore, a team that is 1-0 (1.000) would win the tiebreaker over a team that is 1-1 (.500).
- If the combined records of each tied team are different, the tiebreak is complete.Â
- Example: If Team A is 2-1, Team B is 1-1, and Team C is 1-2, then this is the order of the tiebreak.
- Scenario 1: A BGSU win + An Akron Loss
- No tiebreakers needed here. A BGSU win and an Akron loss would leave six MAC teams with 10+ wins. In this scenario, Akron would be the odd team out of the six-team field with Toledo, Miami (OH) and Bowling Green clinching the final three spots.Â
- Scenario 2: A BGSU win + A Miami (OH) win + An Akron win
- In this scenario, Miami would claim the fourth spot with a three-way tie between BGSU, Toledo and Akron for the last two spots at 10-8.Â
- The first tiebreaker would be head-to-head amongst the three teams. Akron would take the lead at 3-1, followed by Bowling Green at 2-2 and Toledo and 1-3.
- Following the example under the fifth directive of the MAC explanation above, Akron and Bowling Green would claim the last two spots with Toledo as the odd team out of the six-team field.
**In these scenarios, all MAC matches would need to be finalized for the final KPI rankings to determine the tiebreakers. The KPI rankings can be found at the Faktorsports.com link in the MAC provided explanation above.Â
- Scenario 3: A BGSU win + A Miami (OH) loss + An Akron Win
- In this scenario, there would be a four-way tie for the last three spots between BGSU, Miami, Toledo and Akron.
- Again, going to the head-to-head amongst tied teams, the advantage would go to Miami with a 4-1 record followed by Akron at 3-2. Both BGSU and Toledo would be 2-4, sending them to a two-team tiebreaker.
- With BGSU and Toledo in a two-team tiebreaker and tied in the head-to-head, the final spot would go to KPI rankings, linked above as the Faktorsports.com link in the MAC provided explanation. The higher team ranked between BGSU and Toledo would claim the final spot.Â
- Scenario 4:Â A BGSU loss + An Akron loss
- In this scenario, both Miami and Toledo would clinch spots, leaving one up for grabs between BGSU and Akron.
- With both Bowling Green and Akron tied at 9-9 and the head-to-head tied at 1-1, the final spot would go to KPI rankings, linked above as the Faktorsports.com link in the MAC provided explanation. The higher team ranked between BGSU and Akron would claim the final spot.Â
- A BGSU Win + A Miami (OH) Win + An Akron Win
- As Scenario 2 indicates, the tiebreakers would result in Bowling Green claiming the final spot as the No. 6 seed in the field.Â
- A BGSU Win + A Miami (OH) Win + An Akron Loss
- BGSU would enter the tournament as the No.6 seed, being the only team with 10 wins while all other teams would have 11+.Â
- A BGSU Win + A Miami (OH) Loss + An Akron Loss
- BGSU would enter the tournament as the No. 6 seed. While BGSU and Miami would both have 10 MAC wins in this scenario, Miami would have the head-to-head tiebreaker, giving them the higher seed.Â
- All Other Scenarios
- KPI rankings would be needed to settle all other outcomes with the head-to-head being tied at some point during the tiebreaker procedure for BGSU.Â
