Marquette Pulls Away from Falcons, 71-55, Friday Night
November 14, 2025 | Women's Basketball
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Marquette University used a pair of second-half runs to seize control of Friday night's (Nov. 14) game, and the Golden Eagles went on to a 71-55 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team at the Al McGuire Center.
The Falcons (1-3) were within three points with three minutes to go in the third quarter, as a bucket by Johnea Donahue cut the MU lead to 42-39. But, the Golden Eagles (3-1) ended the quarter on a 9-0 run, then answered a Paige Kohler three-pointer with another nine-point run to open up a 60-42 lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the contest.
Lee Volker had a game-high 23 points to lead four Marquette players in double digits, while Halle Vice added 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting. As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 57 percent on the night.
Donahue paced the Falcons with 16 points, while Kohler and Kaia Woods each had seven and Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick and Emily Siesel scored six apiece.
The Falcons had a 27-6 advantage in bench scoring, and lost the rebounding battle by just one, 33-32.
FIRST QUARTER
• Marquette scored on the game's opening possession, and the Golden Eagles slowly took a 6-0 lead before Johnea Donahue's three-point play cut the Falcons' deficit in half several minutes into the contest. The score was still 6-3 at the initial media timeout, over five minutes into the game.
• Kaia Woods hit a nifty up-and-under, and-one layup with 3:35 remaining in the period, but the hosts got a three-pointer, then a run-out to take a 14-6 lead. Woods, however, went coast-to-coast for a buzzer-beating layup to cut BGSU's deficit to 15-8 after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
After scoring only eight points in the first quarter, the Falcons scored eight points in a span of just 41 seconds early in the second. With the shot clock winding down, Emily Siesel hit a three-point try from the top of the arc one minute into the period. The Falcons forced a Marquette miss and Paige Kohler found Siesel for another three-ball in transition.
• Again, the Golden Eagles quickly missed a shot, and BG turned defense into offense as Woods spun and hit a layup to give the Falcons a 16-15 lead.
• BGSU got a pull-up jumper from Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick before Kohler found Donahue for a hoop seven minutes later. Donahue's nifty driving one-hand scoop got the Falcons within a point with three minutes to go in the half.
• Kohler hit a jumper, and Laila Harrison stole the ball, then made a layup to put the Falcons ahead by a point. The lead traded hands again as Halle Vice scored for the hosts, and after a Bland-Fitzpatrick free throw tied the contest, a Skylar Forbes layup gave MU a 29-27 halftime lead.
THIRD QUARTER
• The hosts scored the first five points of the second half, but Donahue drove past a defender for a layup, then went in all alone for another hoop as the Golden Eagles had a defensive breakdown.
• The Falcons were within three points, but then went without a field goal for nearly four minutes. A pull-up jumper by Bland-Fitzpatrick ended that drought, and BG trailed by a 40-35 score with four minutes left in the quarter.
• Kohler's layup was followed by a Bland-Fitzpatrick defensive rebound, and the junior found Donahue ahead of the pack for a fast-break layup that cut the Marquette lead to 42-39. But, Lee Volker's jumper began a 9-0 run that gave the hosts a 12-point advantage after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Kohler opened the fourth-period scoring with a left-wing three-pointer, but the Golden Eagles went on another nine-point run, capped by back-to-back three-pointers from Forbes and Volker, and the lead was 60-42.
• The MU lead grew as high as 22 points before Ky'Aira Miller hit a three-pointer with 5:26 to go. BGSU got five points at the free-throw line over the next few minutes, before Sofia Moschen hit a trailing three on her first offensive possession of the game.
