Falcons use 17-0 run to surge past the Dolphins
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team bridged a 17-0 run around the halftime break, seizing control of Tuesday morning's (Dec. 16) game and going on to a 74-46 win over Le Moyne College. The "School Day" game took place at the Stroh Center.
Paige Kohler had a game-high 17 points for the Falcons (7-4), who have won six consecutive games. Kaia Woods and Jasmine Fearne each had 11 points as a total of eight BGSU players scored at least five points apiece.
Woods had five rebounds to lead the Falcons, and had game-high totals of seven assists and three steals. She also blocked a Le Moyne shot.
Kohler, Fearne and Emily Siesel each knocked down three three-point field-goal attempts, with Siesel going 3-for-5 from long range and tying her career best with nine points.
The Dolphins (1-9), coached by former BGSU assistant Nick DiPillo, got 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds from Ashley Buragas.
Le Moyne only led for a total of 3:15 on Tuesday, but the game was close for the first quarter and a half. The Dolphins whittled a nine-point deficit down to two midway through the second quarter on a Buragas three-point play, and it was still a four-point game after a Buragas putback with just over four minute left in the half.
But, Woods grabbed a defensive rebound and fired a pass to Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick for a fast-break, and-one layup. That bucket began a 12-0 run for the Falcons to end the half, as Woods followed with a three-point play of her own, Lauren Gerken hit a layup and Laila Harrison scored four-straight points.
Woods opened the second-half scoring with a layup, then found Kohler for a three-pointer that gave the hosts a 17-0 run and a 44-23 lead. Just over a minute later, Woods came up with a steal and a score, and BG's lead never fell below 20 points the rest of the way.
A crowd of 2,656, including a large contingent of children from local schools, witnessed the BGSU win.
FIRST QUARTER
• The Dolphins took an early lead, answering Paige Kohler's game-opening layup with five consecutive points. A fast-break layup by Kayden Clark gave the visitors a 7-3 lead just over two minutes into the contest.
• Kohler knocked down a three-point try, however, and after Eli Clark hit a jumper, Jasmine Fearne's triple tied the score at 9-9. BG extended the lead to 13-9 before a Sierra Linnin trey made it a one-point game.
• But, the Falcons ended the quarter on a 7-0 run. Kohler, who had 11 points in the opening period, made back-to-back layups, and after a steal by Kaia Woods, Fearne's 'extra pass' led to Emily Siesel's buzzer-beating three-pointer that gave the Brown and Orange a 20-12 lead.
SECOND QUARTER
• Fearne's second long-range make of the day gave BGSU a nine-point lead early in the second period, but Kayden Clark made a layup to start a 7-0 run for the visitors. That run was capped by an Ashley Buragas three-point play with 5:36 left to go in the half, cutting BG's advantage to 23-21.
• After a Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick free throw snapped that run, the junior came up with a steal, leading to Lauren Gerken's three-pointer in transition. Buragas hit a layup, but Bland-Fitzpatrick and Woods had three-point plays just over a minute apart, and Bland-Fitzpatrick then found Gerken for a layup.
• Laila Harrison made a layup, then hit a pair of free throws, and the Falcons had a 12-0 run and a 39-23 lead at the half.
THIRD QUARTER
• BGSU's run reached 17 points after Woods hit a layup and fed Kohler for a long-range make early in the second half. After Buragas answered with a layup,
a steal and score by Woods gave the hosts a 46-25 lead, and the Falcons' advantage never dropped below 20 points thereafter.
• Gerken's putback and Siesel's triple put BG up by 26, and after a six-point run by the Dolphins cut into that lead, a Gerken steal led to a transition hoop, with Kohler's pass leading to another Woods layup.
• Moments later, Siesel took a Ky'Aira Miller pass and drained her third triple of the day, and two Miller free throws gave the Falcons a 58-33 lead heading into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Fearne's layup opened the fourth-period scoring, before the visitors scored the next seven points, with a Peyton Dincher three-pointer cutting BG's lead to 60-40. But, Siesel found Fearne for a triple, and after a Bland-Fitzpatrick fre throw, Fearne spotted Kohler for a three-pointer that gave the hosts a 67-42 lead and sent the youthful Stroh Center crowd into a frenzy.
• Buckets by Bland-Fitzpatrick and Miller began a 7-0 run for the Falcons, with a Harrison layup giving the Orange and Brown a game-high 30-point lead in the final minute, before a pair of Jessica Wangolo charity tosses provided the final margin.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons' season-long six-game homestand concludes on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 20), when Kent State comes to the Stroh Center for the Mid-American Conference opener. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will take a break for the holidays, before facing Eastern Michigan on Dec. 30 in Ypsilanti. That game will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the George Gervin GameAbove Center.
