SETTING THE SCENE / FOLLOW THE FALCONS
• The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, off to the best start in program history, faces a tough test this weekend. Head coach Chris Fox and the Falcons face defending Mid-American Conference champion Western Michigan University on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 21). First touch is set for 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium, and admission is free.
• The WMU match is the first of two home matches, on back-to-back Sundays, to end the month of September. BGSU will face Central Michigan University in another 1:00 p.m. start at Cochrane on Sept. 28.
CANINES AT COCHRANE
• Sunday's WMU game is the Falcons' annual "Canines at Cochrane" game, with fans encouraged to bring their favorite pooch to the contest.
WHERE TO WATCH
• Sunday's Western Michigan matchup and next weekend's Central Michigan contest each will be streamed on YouTube, and produced by WBGU-TV.

THE STARTING XI
I – The Falcons are 6-1-2, which the best nine-game start in school history. Prior to this fall, the best nine-game start was set by the 2008 team (5-2-2) and matched by the 2016 and '17 squads (each started 6-3-0). The 2025 season is the 29th in the history of the program, which began in 1997.
II – Head coach Chris Fox and Company will put a seven-match unbeaten streak – tied for the third-longest such streak in program history – on the line in Sunday's match. BGSU is 5-0-2 since a 1-0 loss to Illinois on Aug. 17.
III – The Falcons are 1-0-1 in Mid-American Conference play after a 2-1 win over Kent State last Sunday (Sept. 14) and a 1-1 draw at Ohio Thursday (Sept. 18). Junior Emma Stransky scored both BGSU goals vs. KSU, for her first career brace. On Tuesday (Sept. 16), Stransky was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week. At Ohio, junior Gabby Lamparty headed home a free kick from classmate Emme Butera with just over seven minutes to go.
IV – The first RPI rankings of 2025 were released on Monday (Sept. 15), with BGSU checking in at number 45. That is the highest ranking of any MAC school.
V – While BGSU has a seven-game overall unbeaten streak, Western Michigan enters Sunday with a 24-game unbeaten streak in MAC regular-season play. The Broncos have not lost a league regular-season game since October of 2022.
VI – Stransky leads the Falcons in scoring, with five goals and 10 points on the year. She scored the game-winning goal in back-to-back games, vs. Duquesne and KSU. Lamparty and sixth-year collegian Ellie Pool each have six points, while juniors Ella Kane and Isabella Mazzaferro each have five. All four players have two goals to date. Sophomore Haley Wolf has a team-high three assists, and is tied for the MAC lead in that category.
VII – Sophomore Payton O'Malley has played every second in goal this season, and has 33 saves, a goals-against average of 0.67 and a save percentage of .846. She leads the MAC in save pct. and is tied for the league lead in shutouts (three). O'Malley is second in the conference in GAA and third in total saves.
VIII – A total of 25 different players have seen action this season to date, with 19 Falcons having made at least one start. Five players – O'Malley, Pool, Emme Butera, Taylor Green and Gabby Lamparty – each have started all nine games.
IX – BGSU finished the 2024 season with an overall record of 7-7-4 and a MAC ledger of 4-4-3. The Falcons finished in sixth place in the 12-team conference. BG went 4-1-3 at home and 3-6-1 on the road in 2024. Fox and his staff – first-year assistant coaches Steven Samuel and Kyle Pettican – have a total of 20 returning student-athletes. That group includes seven starters from a year ago. Six of the top-nine scorers from '24 returned.
X – Western Michigan is 5-2-0 heading into Sunday's game, and the Broncos have won five-straight games after season-opening setbacks to top-10 teams Notre Dame and Iowa. WMU topped Miami, 3-2 on the road, to open MAC play Thursday night. Abby Werthman leads the club with 13 points on five goals and three assists, while Reagan Sulaver has played every minute in goal for coach Lewis Robinson's club, and has 25 saves and a GAA of just 1.14. Last season, the Broncos went 13-2-6 overall and 8-0-3 in MAC play.
XI – The Falcons trail WMU, 18-11-3, in the all-time series. BGSU had been unbeaten in the prior six matches (4-0-2) vs. the Broncos before WMU dealt the Falcons a 4-0 setback last season in Kalamazoo (Oct. 10, 2024). The last meeting at Cochrane saw the teams play to a scoreless draw two years ago (Sept. 24, 2023). BGSU is 6-6-2 in home games, 3-12-1 in road games and 2-0-0 in neutral-site matches vs. the Broncos through the years.
