MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Bowling Green track and field program returns from the Jack Skoog Open after setting a slew of personal records, adding a few athletes to the all-time list, and adding impactful experience.
Central Michigan hosts the MAC Indoor Championship on Feb. 27, so Head Track and Field Coach Lou Snelling emphasized the importance of experience at CMU's Indoor Athletic Complex.
"It's good to be comfortable with what this is. We know what it looks like. We know what it feels like. I don't care if we like it or not, it's about knowing what it is as we head towards the chip."
The meet began in the field, where the Falcons claimed silver in the weight throw and shot put. Grace Bradtmueller threw for 15.55m, while Sierra Brinson tossed the shot 13.37m.
On the track, Morgan Patterson notched a second-place finish in the 60m hurdles with an 8.71. Kiersten Franklin then won the 200m with a 25.28 scamper, followed by Alexsia Davis, who ran a 25.73 (PR).
Kiera Bonds captured the 60m at 7.71, edging out CMU's Garland by a tenth of a second. She then set a personal in the triple jump, leaping to 11.72m. This mark came in just her second competition in the event, and that mark ranked eighth in the MAC.
Reagan Campbell (57.53) and Tyyetta Herman (58.41) placed second and third in the 400m dash. Rachael Hoover paced to first in the 800m at 2:12.64 while Kylee Cubbison posted a personal record at 2:15.74 to finish third. Hoover and Cubbison rank 46th and 97th in the NCAA and 38th and 80th in Division I, respectively.
The duo also excelled in the distance events. Kylee Cubbison (4:49.31) won the mile with Rachael Hoover (4:50.99, PR) on her heels. Cubbison now ranks 25th in Division I in that event, while Hoover is 34th in Division I and climbed to 5th on BGSU's all-time list.
Lexi Panning capped the meet with a commanding win in the 3000m (9:55.74), inking her name 10th on Bowling Green's all-time list. Regina Rose finished third at 10:08.54, a new personal record.
"It was just a lot of grinding today," Snelling said. "There were a lot of people who didn't have a full tank coming into today, due to the work we were doing. So no big numbers for anybody, really. But with that effort level and as fitness, speed and strength come together, we'll see bigger things in further competition."
The Falcons will head back to the Great Lakes State in one week for the Bob Parks Memorial on Jan. 24.
"It's January 16," said Snelling. "As a team, we look like it's January 16. We had a lot of good moments, but we're not the sharpest at this point, nor should we be, right? So, I think we're in an appropriate place. It's just where we go from here, it's the building that has to happen."
