Bulls Get Past Falcons, 5-4, in Series Opener
March 27, 2026 | Softball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University at Buffalo pushed the go-ahead run across the plate in the seventh inning on Friday afternoon (March 27), as the Bulls topped the Bowling Green State University softball team, 5-4, in Mid-American Conference action at Meserve Field.
Reagan Terwilliger tripled with one out in the final inning, then tagged and scored on Nicole Allen's sacrifice fly for the Bulls (13-17, 4-3 MAC). Allen drove in three of UB's five runs.
UB had taken the lead with a pair of first-inning runs, before the Falcons (14-13, 2-5 MAC) scored three times in the second. UB forged back ahead with two runs in the fourth, but a BG run in the bottom of that frame tied the game and concluded the scoring until the final frame.
Redshirt sophomore Addie Martin scored a pair of runs for the Falcons, and was one of five BG players with a hit in the contest. Martin singled and was hit by a pitch, while sophomore Hanna Massaro walked and doubled and junior Cameron Kaufman had a pair of walks.
BGSU-UB – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Bulls took the lead in the top of the first. Emily Gorman began the game with an infield single, and Regan Terwilliger walked. Both runners would score on a Nicole Allen base hit, before BGSU starter Mackenzie Krafcik set down the next three batters.
• After those first three Bulls reached base, Krafcik would allow just six hits and three runs (one earned) over the final 21 outs.
• BGSU scored three times, getting just one hit in the process, in the second. Cameron Kaufman drew a one-out walk against Genevieve Longsdorf, and after Kaufman took second on a passed ball, Hannah Hunt walked and Addie Martin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ashley Chevalier followed with a fly ball to right, with Kaufman tagging and scoring on the sac fly.
• Hunt had tagged and taken third on the play, putting runners at the corners, and Martin promptly stole second on the next pitch. Hunt stole home on the play, and when a relay throw to the plate was off line, Martin came all the way around to score as well, giving the Falcons a 3-2 lead.
• Hanna Massaro drew a walk, and Hannah Simko singled (the only hit of the half inning), but Longsdorf recovered to get an inning-ending strikeout.
• In the fourth, Bri Delaney led off with a single, and on a ground ball by Abbey Nagel, both runners were safe as a throw to second was wide of the bag. Ardyn Hopf singled to load the bases, before BG got an out at second on a fielder's choice, with Delaney scoring on the play.
• Ava Thelen then hit a grounder, with Nagel scoring ahead of a throw home. The other runners each took an extra base on the play, putting Bulls at second and third. But, third baseman Martin grabbed Gorman's popup near the bag and tagged pinch-runner Miranda Zipp for an inning-ending double play.
• BG tied the score in the bottom of the inning. Martin beat out a grounder in the hole at short for a leadoff single and prompty picked up her second stolen base of the game. She took third on a foul fly to right, then scored easily on Massaro's double to the gap in right center.
• Taylor Behrendt doubled off the wall with one out in the fifth, and moved to third on Kaufman's sac bunt, but was stranded there. In the sixth, Chevalier walked on four pitches before pinch-runner Delaney Davis swiped second, but Longsdorf got an infield popup and a soft liner to left to escape damage.
• In the seventh, Reagan Terwilliger drove a ball to the wall in left center for a one-out triple, and tagged and scored on a fly ball to left.
• The bottom of the inning saw Peyton Steffes reach on a one-out single, and the junior stole second with two outs. But, Longsdorf closed out the game by inducing a fly ball to center.
• Each pitcher threw a complete game. Longsdorf allowed five hits and three earned runs. She issued five walked and hit a batter, but struck out six.
• Krafcik gave up eight hits and three earned runs, walking just one Bull and striking out two.
• At the plate, Gorman, Allen and Delaney all had two-hit games for the visitors, with Allen driving in three runs.
• Five different Falcons had one hit apiece, with Massaro and Behrendt each hitting a double in the gap.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons and Bulls conclude their three-game weekend series with a Saturday (March 28) doubleheader. First pitch of the opener is set for 1:00 p.m. at Meserve Field.
