Kelly Leatherman (the former Kelly Haubert)Â was named an assistant coach in the fall of 2019, working with the women's cross country and track & field programs. A 2018 graduate of Grand Valley State University, Haubert excelled as a student athlete in both college and high school.
In her first season as an assistant cross country coach, Leatherman guided Cesar Arellano and Katerina Shuble to top-20 finishes at the MAC Championships. The following season, the women's team improved to a third-place finish in the MAC, as redshirt freshman Kailee Perry won the race and qualified for the NCAA Championships. The team remained consistent in 2021, placing fourth in the MAC with a pair of All-MAC racers in Katerina Shuble and Sydney Niekamp.
Leatherman has been integral in the development of an elite distance medley relay team, as the Falcons have won the event at three consectuive MAC Championships. In 2021, Katerina Shuble, Jazzlyn Gaiters, Trinity Fowler, and Kailee Perry secured the program's first MAC DMR title. The following season, Perry and Shuble grouped with Darian Braddix and Raegan Burkey to repeat as DMR champions. In 2023, the Falcons defended their title at home, with the quartet of Perry, Braddix, Izzy Best, and Shuble winning with the second-best time in school history. Additionally, Perry set a pair of school records in the 1500 and 3000, with BGSU earning a third-place team finish at the 2021 MAC Indoor Championship. The 2023 season saw the Falcons finish third once again, with Shuble adding a career-best second-place finish in the mile.
The Falcons, competing outdoors for the first time in two years, finished as the runner-up at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational and team champion at the Gibson Invitational in 2021. Multiple runners placed in the top five of distance events, including Gibson Invite 1500 champion Kailee Perry.
The following season, Perry again broke the 1500 record, placing second at the MAC Championships. Shuble's fourth-place finish added more points to the BGSU total, as did Perry's third-place mark in the 5000. In the 10000, Olivia Collett paced the Orange and Brown with a ninth-place finish. 2023 saw sustained success in the 1500, as freshman Kylee Cubbison won the MAC title, BGSU's first since 1989. Fellow freshman Regina Rose earned a spot on the podium, finishing seventh in the 10K. This was part of an outstanding Falcon effort, with Bowling Green placing fourth in the team standings, the team's best finish since 1998.
Haubert was a three-time National Champion in cross country at Grand Valley State winning in 2013, 2014 and 2016. Her college career included four cross country championship appearances, two indoor track National Championship appearances (5000 & 3000), and one Outdoor Track National Championship Appearance (10,000). A three-time All-American (twice in cross country, once in track), Haubert served as team captain during her senior season (2017-18) while also being involved in the recruiting process. She also assisted home meets in various different ways.
Leatherman comes to BGSU following a year as a Core Assurance Associate with PricewaterhouseCooper where she worked as an auditor.
