2020(-21) USC NORTH REGION STAFF OF THE YEAR
Sean Teepen will enter his fifth season on the Bowling Green State University men’s soccer staff in the fall of 2022. Head coach Eric Nichols announced Teepen's hiring on March 23, 2018.
After serving as an assistant coach for the Falcons in the 2018 and '19 seasons, Teepen was promoted to associate head coach in December of 2019. His duties at BGSU include coaching the goalkeepers and serving as the Falcons' recruiting coordinator.
Teepen, a native of Cincinnati, joined the Falcons after spending the 2017 season at Oregon State University. In his first four seasons in Northwest Ohio, Teepen has helped the Falcons to an overall record of 37-25-9.
In fact, entering the fall of 2022, the Falcons have an overall record of 36-20-7 in the last 63 matches, for a winning percentage of .627 in that time.
The Falcons' trip to the NCAAs in 2020 (actually the spring of 2021) was BG's first appearance since 1997, and the Brown and Orange returned to the national tourney in the fall of 2021.
BGSU went to Louisville for the first round of the 2021 NCAA Championships and came away with a 1-0 victory over the Cardinals, the program's first national tournament victory since that '97 season.
In the spring of 2021, the BGSU coaches were named the United Soccer Coaches North Region Staff of the year.
The fall 2021 campaign saw the Falcons post an overall record of 11-6-3, and BGSU earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. Ten of BGSU's 20 matches on the season were played against teams that, like the Falcons, advanced to the national tournament. And, BG played 10 contests vs. teams in the top-50 of the final RPI rankings.
BGSU won six true road matches in 2021, the third time the Falcons had turned that trick in the Nichols Era. No BG team has won more true road contests since 1997.
BG ended the 2021 season ranked number 30 in the final College Soccer News poll for the second consecutive season, and the Falcons ended the year ranked 27th (second team listed among 'receiving votes') in the final United Soccer Coaches poll.
BG was well-represented when the 2021 end-of-season awards were handed out. Zach Buescher and Jacob Erlandson were named to the All-MAC First Team, while Alberto Anaya and Joey Akpunonu earned all-league second-team accolades. Anaya was named the MAC Freshman of the Year.
Erlandson went on to be named to the United Soccer Coaches All-North Region First Team, with Buescher earning second-team honors and Anaya third-team accolades. Erlandson was invited to the MLS College Showcase, and was drafted by the Columbus Crew in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft.
No fewer than seven Falcons earned honors from the OCSA, with Anaya, Buescher and Erlandson all named to the All-Ohio First Team and Akpunonu and Jensen Lukacsko earning second-team honors. Lukacsko, Michael Montemurri and Kale Nichols were named to the Academic All-Ohio Team, and Eric Nichols, as mentioned earlier, was the OCSA's Coach of the Year.
Montemurri and Kale Nichols each were named to the Academic All-District Team, selected by CoSIDA, and Montemurri went on to earn Academic All-America honors.
And, a total of eight Falcons were named to the Academic All-MAC Team. That list of honorees included Akpunonu, Lukacsko, Montemurri, Kale Nichols, Kyle Cusimano, Abdi Faqi, Logan Kowalczyk and Carter Womack.
Anaya was named to a pair of national all-freshman teams, being chosen to both the College Soccer News All-Freshman Second Team and the Top Drawer Soccer 'Freshman Best XI' Second Team.
The Falcons had entered the 2021 season as the defending MAC champions for the first time in nearly two decades. BGSU captured the conference crown and advanced to the NCAA Championships in the spring of '21
The 2020(-21) team ended the season ranked No. 30 in the final College Soccer News poll. The Falcons finished third in the final United Soccer Coaches North Region poll, and the coaching staff, as mentioned, was named the North Region Staff of the Year.
The Falcons’ outright MAC regular-season title was the program’s first since 1996. BGSU participated in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997 and saw a school-record six players named to the All-MAC Team.
The 2019 season saw the Falcons win 13 contests, the highest total in five years and only the second double-digit victory total since 1998. The Brown and Orange kept 11 clean sheets, recording a double-figure shutout total for the first time since that '98 campaign.
BG advanced to the MAC Tournament's championship match for the first time in five years. Along the way, the Falcons downed Northern Illinois at home in the quarterfinal round, then defeated Akron on the Zips' home field in the semifinals. The latter match marked BGSU's first victory over the Zips since 2002, and was the program's first road win since 1997.
The 2019 Falcons more than doubled the win total from the previous season. BG won four total matches vs. MAC foes in a season for the first time since 2003.
BGSU landed a school-record six players on the All-MAC Team in 2019 (a total equaled in 2020-21), as Anthony Mwembia and Robin made the first team, while Chris Brennan, Buescher, Charlie Maciejewski and Chris Sullivan all were named to the second team. Mwembia and Robin went on to be named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team as well.
BGSU closed the 2018 season with an overall record of 6-7-4, and the Falcons posted a 2-1-2 mark in MAC play. BG, picked to place fifth in the six-team conference, finished second and earned a first-round bye for the league tourney.
BG went 5-1-2 over the final eight contests of the 2018 regular season, including a six-match unbeaten streak, the program's longest since 1997.
Teepen, as mentioned, works primarily with the goalkeepers at BGSU. Under his guidance, three different ‘keepers, including a pair of freshmen, had at least one shutout for Oregon State in 2017. The Beavers posted four wins over ranked opponents that season.
At BG, Teepen helped Mwembia and the BGSU defensive corps keep 11 clean sheets -- just one shy of the school record -- in 2019. Mwembia ended his stellar Falcon career ranked second in program history in career shutouts.
And, in the spring of 2021, Kowalczyk posted five shutouts in eight MAC matches, and had a 5-2-1 record, a miniscule 0.59 GAA and a save pct. of .808 in conference play.
Teepen had joined OSU in the spring of 2017 after spending the 2016 campaign at Coastal Carolina University, where he helped the Chanticleers to Sun Belt Conference regular-season and tournament titles and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Under Teepen’s tutelage, CCU placed two players on the Sun Belt first team and four on the second team. Starting goalkeeper Braulio Linares-Ortiz led the conference in goals against average (0.74), save percentage (0.814) and shut outs (6), and earned three Defensive Player of the Week honors.
In addition to his duties with the team’s goalkeepers, Teepen produced all scouting video for the Chanticleers, and managed the player GPS and Heart Rate monitors.
Prior to joining the CCU staff, Teepen served as an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach at the University of Charleston (W.Va.), his alma mater, from 2013-15. While on the staff there, he helped the Golden Eagles men’s soccer team win a combined five conference titles and earn the nation’s No. 1 ranking by the NSCAA.
In 2015, Teepen helped Charleston to a 20-3 overall record and a Mountain East Conference tournament championship. The 2014 squad went 22-1-1, was an NCAA Division II national runner-up, earned that NSCAA No. 1 national ranking and won the MEC tournament. In 2013, Teepen’s first year with the program, the Golden Eagles captured the MEC Tournament title.
During his three-year tenure at Charleston, Teepen coached five All-Americans, 10 All-Region and 18 All-Mountain East Conference selections.
His coaching experience also includes stints with the Myrtle Beach Mutiny (2016-2017), Coast FA (2016-2017), West Virginia Chaos (2014-15), University of Charleston women’s team (2013-15), West Virginia ODP (2015), Charleston FC (2014-15) and Walnut Hills High School (2014).
Teepen entered the coaching ranks following an accomplished pro and college playing career. Between 2009 and 2012, he played at the University of Charleston, where he was a four-time NSCAA All-Regional and three-time WVIAC All-Conference selection.
Teepen was a four-year starter in goal at Charleston, leading the Golden Eagles to three NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2009 and Sweet 16 in 2010.
Following his graduation from Charleston in 2013, Teepen signed a professional contract with the Dayton Dutch Lions of the USL Pro Division. Teepen’s playing experience also includes stints with the Michigan Bucks, West Virginia Chaos and Myrtle Beach Mutiny in the USL Premier Development League.
Teepen earned his bachelor’s degree in interior design from the University of Charleston in 2013 and his master’s degree, also from Charleston, in strategic leadership in 2015.
