Bowling Green State University head volleyball coach Danijela Tomic announced the hiring of Sean Drexl as director of volleyball operations and head club volleyball coach on Aug. 1, 2023. Drexl joined the staff of the Falcons after spending the 2022 season as an assistant coach at Presbyterian College of the Big South Conference.
The Falcons put together a historic 2024 campaign, finishing 25-10 with a 16-2 MAC record, capturing the MAC Championship and finishing as the NIVC Runner-Up for just the second time in program history. As a team in 2024, the Falcons set multiple Rally Scoring Era records, including aces in a season (231) and total blocks in a season (335.5). The team also matched the record for solo blocks in a three-set match, registering five against Buffalo on Oct. 17. The 16-2 MAC record matched the records for most MAC wins, best MAC winning percentage and the fewest MAC losses in an 18-match conference season. In totality, 38 individual accolades were added to the record book following the season in either the All-Time or Rally Scoring Eras. Among those including Alexis Mettille breaking the program’s single-season and career hitting percentage records as well as Lauryn Hovey breaking the Rally Scoring records for single-season and career aces.
Drexl arrived in Bowling Green with two years of coaching experience at the Division I level, spending the 2022 season as an assistant coach at Presbyterian College and the 2021 season as a volunteer assistant coach at Georgia Southern. With Presbyterian, Drexl assisted the Blue Hose to a 9-19 record with a 5-11 conference standing before serving as interim head coach for a month following the season. As for his season with Georgia Southern, Drexl and the Eagles finished the season 17-11 with a 9-7 conference record in the Sun Belt.
Drexl's coaching career began as the U16 head coach for MVP Academy, a boys volleyball club in Florida. Drexl held the position each summer from 2018-21 while playing collegiately for the University of Charleston. At Charleston, Drexl was a libero from 2017-21 and earned All-Conference EIVA Second Team honors at the conclusion of his senior season in 2021. He earned a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science. He also served as a student manager for the girl's volleyball program at his high school alma mater, Monarch High School, from 2013-17.
