Buddy Powers joined the 2022-23 Falcon Hockey coaching staff as a volunteer assistant, continuing his legendary career that includes various roles at various levels. The 1975 graduate of Boston University played three years with the Terriers before playing professionally in Germany for four seasons. His coaching career began at Colgate, then he joined BGSU as an assistant in 1982.
In his first season, Powers coached George McPhee, who became the program's first Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner. Two seasons later, Powers helped the Falcons capture the school's first national title. In his six years on staff, BGSU won five CCHA titles and appeared in the NCAA Tournament four times. He also earned his master's degree in Athletic Administration from BGSU. Powers spent time as the head coach at RIT and RPI, leading RIT to the 1989 NCAA D-III championship game and RPI to the 1994 NCAA Tournament. In 1994-95, he returned to Bowling Green as the head coach. In his first season, he mentored the Falcons' second Hobey Baker winner, Brian Holzinger. The Falcons finished the year with a 25-11-2 record, with Powers earning CCHA Coach of the Year.
In eight years as BGSU's head coach, he totaled 135 wins, fourth-most in program history. His career head coaching record is 255-240-41. Powers spent time as the BGSU Ice Arena Director and color commentator for BCSN. He coached multiple teams at the United States Olympic Festival Games. He also coached with the US National Development Team and served on the NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Committee. His last coaching stop was Boston University, where he was an assistant from 2009-14. Most recently, he spent eight seasons as a scout for the NHL's Dallas Stars. In his sixth season, the Stars won the Western Conference and appeared in the Stanley Cup.
