UCF broke on top in the first quarter scoring the only 10 points of the quarter and took a 17-6 edge to the locker room. UCF outgained the Falcons 256-127 in the first 30 minutes with 240 of those yards throught the air.
The Falcons scored the first points of the second half late in the third quarter on a short Andy Sahm run to cut the deficit five points.
But, UCF blocked a BG punt just 19 seconds into the final stanza to take a 24-12 lead.
The Falcons came right back to drive 63 yards with Sahm connecting with Matt Bunsey on a 14-yard scoring pass which came on the fourth-and-two play.
After a UCF field goal, BG drove 59 yards in 12 plays with Sahm sneeking over from one-yard out to tie the score with just 2:11 left in regulation time forcing the first overtime game for the Falcons since 1996.
BG won the toss in the extra period and elected to play defense first. UCF had one 12-yard pass, but three straight incomplete passes made the Golden Knights take the field goal.
It took the Falcons just four plays to put the finishing touches on the comeback win. Joe Alls ran for seven yards on the first play, Brent Martin gained four yards on the second play, All carried for six yards, and then ended the game with the eight-yard scamper around right end for the winning points.
Kurt Gerling had caught seven passes for 119 yards while Alls rushed 23 times for 81 yards as the Falcons had 342 yards of total offense.
The Falcons only other overtime game was a 16-13 loss to Western Michigan at home in 1996.
