BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Western Michigan women's basketball team put on a clinic Thursday.
Unfortunately for Bowling Green, the clinic was held at Anderson Arena, and the Falcons were unwilling participants.
WMU's Kristin Koetsier and Shelsea Erving combined for 52 points, and the visiting team excelled in nearly every phase of the game as the Broncos handed the Brown and Orange an 88-67 setback. Koetsier, just a freshman, had a game-high 30 points and 12 rebounds, while Erving added 22 points and seven boards.
The visitors, who never trailed, scored the first six points of the game, and held a 16-6 lead after a Danielle Mueller layup seven-and-a-half minutes in. WMU still led by 10, 28-18, with seven minutes remaining in the half, when the Falcons (4-13 overall, 2-5 Mid-American Conference) made a run.
A Karen Stocz layup was followed by a Dana Western three-pointer, and the lead was cut in half. After a pair of Koetsier free throws, Angie Farmer buried a trey to cut the WMU advantage to four points, at 32-28. But, the Falcons could draw no closer.
The teams traded baskets before Koetsier took over. The center converted on a conventional three-point play, then got to the line on the Broncos' (8-7, 5-0 MAC) next possession and drained both free throws. Erving then sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around a Francine Miller layup, and the Bronco lead was 13. BG could never again get closer than double digits.
In the second half, the Broncos led by as many as 36 points. The Brown and Orange scored the last eight points of the game to provide the final 21-point margin.
For BG, Western was the high scorer, with a career-best 15 points off the bench. Miller added 12 points and a team-best 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Three Falcons - junior Angie Farmer and freshmen Kim Griech and Megan Jerome - had eight points apiece, with Jerome pulling down a career-high six caroms.
Jaymee Wappes had six assists to lead the Brown and Orange in that department.
For WMU, Danielle Mueller had 14 points and 12 boards, while the backcourt tandem of twins Brooke and Brianne Gallert combined for 16 assists and no turnovers.
The Falcons committed just nine turnovers in the game, a season low. WMU, however, turned the ball over only six times on the evening.
After back-to-back games against the MAC's divisional leaders (Kent and WMU), the Falcons head to Oxford for a Saturday (Jan. 22) contest against the East Division's second-place team, Miami. BGSU and the RedHawks will do battle in a 2:00 p.m. start at MU's Millett Hall.
