The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team was picked to finish sixth in the 1999 Mid-American Conference race, according to the league's coaches. The MAC Preseason Poll was released this afternoon by the conference office in Cleveland.
The Falcons received 76 points to place behind Ohio, Northern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Kent and Central Michigan. BG ranked ahead of Toledo, Miami, Buffalo, Western Michigan, Marshall and Ball State, according to the 12 coaches. Just eight points separated the fifth- through ninth-place teams in the poll.
Ohio and NIU tied for the regular-season crown in 1998, and NIU went on to win the conference tournament for the second consecutive year.
BGSU finished sixth in the regular-season race last fall. The Falcons then upset third-seeded EMU in the quarterfinals of the conference tourney before falling to NIU in overtime in the semifinals.
The Falcons host the Michigan Hawks, a club team, in a scrimmage Sunday (Aug. 22). The contest most likely will be held at the Falcons' practice field, located west of Doyt Perry Stadium and just southeast of Cochrane Field.
BGSU opens the regular season with a pair of home matches the following weekend, meeting Michigan State Friday (Aug. 27) and Valparaiso Sunday (Aug. 29). The MSU match is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field, while the Valpo contest is set for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff.
