Falcons Volleyball Ends Season At 21-12

* The Falcons fell to top-seeded Ball State in the semifinal round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament Friday (Nov. 26) ... the Brown and Orange, the tourney's fourth seed, had earned the right to face the Cardinals with a five-game win over visiting Miami in the quarterfinal round ... senior Heather Greig was BG's lone representative on the all-tourney team.
* Senior Lori Kemerer ends her career at the top of the BGSU career list for block assists ... with 413 in her career, Kemerer finished her tenure dead even with Lisa Mika (413 from 1998-91) for the number-one spot on that chart ... with 523 total blocks in her career, Kemerer finishes second at BGSU (behind Mika) and fifth in MAC history.
* The Falcons won 21 matches this season, marking the eighth time in school history that BGSU has reached the 20-win plateau ... the Falcons tripled last year's MAC win total ... after going 4-14 in conference action in 1998, BGSU was 12-6 this fall.
* The Brown and Orange defeated Miami for the first time since the 1993 season ... the Falcons had lost 12 consecutive matches to the Redskins/RedHawks.
UP NEXT: The Bowling Green State University volleyball team has completed the 1999 season. The Falcons ended the year with an overall record of 21-12 and a Mid-American Conference mark of 12-6. BGSU finished second in the East Division, and the Falcons were seeded fourth for the MAC Tournament. The Brown and Orange defeated #5 seed Miami in the quarterfinal round (Nov. 23) at Anderson Arena before losing to top-seeded Ball State in the semifinals three days later (Nov. 26).
LEWIS, KEMERER ARE ALL-MAC: BG seniors Melissa Lewis and Lori Kemerer have been named to the All-MAC Team, the league office announced last Wednesday (Nov. 24). Lewis earned All-MAC First-Team honors, while Kemerer was named to the all-conference second team.
DENISE VAN DE WALLE: Denise Van De Walle, the dean of MAC mentors, has completed her 17th year with the Falcons. She is the second-winningest coach in MAC history with 317 career victories, and her 145 MAC wins also rank her second all-time. Van De Walle reached the 300-win mark for her career Sept. 10, when the Falcons swept Mississippi State.
Tom Hanna has wrapped up his fourth season as Van De Walle's assistant, while former BGSU setter Wendy (Watkins) Teaman ends her first year on the BG staff.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: Bowling Green ended the year with an overall record of 21-12, and the Falcons finished MAC play with a 12-6 league slate. Prior to the Falcons' season-ending loss to BSU in the MAC Tournament semifinals, the Brown and Orange had captured 15 of the last 18 contests after a 6-8 start.
BGSU, the fourth seed for the MAC Tournament, earned the trip to Muncie with a five-game win over fifth-seeded Miami in last Tuesday's (Nov. 23) quarterfinal match. Senior Melissa Lewis had 21 kills to pace five Falcons in double digits, while freshman Kate Yeo had 20 digs to lead six double-digit diggers. Senior Heather Greig had 67 assists, one shy of her career high.
Lewis led the Brown and Orange with 12 kills and nine digs in the three-game loss to Ball State. Junior JoAnna Papageorgiou had a team-best four blocks, including a pair of solo rejections.
BGSU finished the regular season in second place in the MAC's East Division, a game behind Akron. The Falcons were picked to finish fourth in the division in the preseason coaches' poll.
The Brown and Orange finished with the fourth-best record in the MAC, earning a homecourt berth for the tourney quarterfinals in the process.
Individually, Lewis led the Falcons with 527 kills on the season. Lewis is ranked third in the MAC in kills per game with 4.47, and hit a team-best .279 (eighth in the MAC) this year. Greig dished out 1,321 assists, the second-highest total in school history, for an average of 11.19 per game. Another senior, Lori Kemerer, led BG -- and leads the MAC -- in blocks per game with 1.34. She also paced the team in digs per game (3.06), with Lewis (2.97 dpg) a close second in that category. Kemerer hit a stellar .314 in league play.
As a team, the Falcons led the MAC with 2.74 blocks per game.
Last season, the Falcons finished with an overall record of 11-21. BG finished in sixth place in the MAC's seven-team East Division with a 4-14 league record.
QUITE A TURNAROUND: The Falcons were the most-improved team in the MAC in 1999. BGSU, after finishing the 1998 season with an 11-21 overall mark, went 21-12 this fall, an improvement of nine-and-a-half games. The Falcons tripled the MAC win total from a year ago, going from 4-14 to 12-6.

"POP" NAMED TO ACADEMIC TEAM: Junior JoAnna Papageorgiou was named to the GTE Academic All-District IV Team ... "Pop" was named to the district's third team ... the team, which was announced on Nov. 23, is made up of student-athletes from NCAA Division I schools in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee ... to be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or an important reserve, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher ... team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district ... Papageorgiou started BG's first 12 matches of the year before missing five contests due to injury ... she returned to the starting lineup for the team's last three contests of the year ... KEMERER HOLDS A BLOCK PARTY: Senior Lori Kemerer's life at BGSU seemed to be one big block party ... Kemerer ended her career with 523 total blocks ... that figure ranks second all-time at BG, and is the fifth-highest total in Mid-American Conference history ... LAST WEEK: The Falcons recorded the team's biggest victory in six years with a five-game marathon triumph (15-12, 4-15, 15-5, 5-15, 15-11) over the RedHawks at Anderson Arena Tuesday (Nov. 23) ... BGSU captured its first MAC Tournament win since the 1993 season, and the Falcons downed MU for the first time since that same year ... BG had lost 12 consecutive matches to the Redskins/RedHawks during that time ... the Brown and Orange came out strong ... senior Heather Greig opened the contest with a service ace, and the Falcons raced to a 5-0 lead in game one ... BGSU held leads of 7-3 and 10-4, but the visitors fought back to within 12-11 ... a pair of kills by senior Kris Pesorda, however, capped off the game ... the visitors never let BG get untracked in the second game, charging to an 8-0 lead ... back-to-back kills by senior Melissa Lewis sparked a 3-0 BG run that cut the deficit to 10-4, but the RedHawks scored the last five points of the game ... the Falcons opened game three just like game one -- with a Greig ace ... the Falcons led by a 4-0 count, let the 'Hawks close the gap to 7-5, then reeled off the final eight points ... THANKS, SENIORS: The Falcons saw the careers of four seniors end in the Ball State match ... setter Heather Greig, middle Lori Kemerer, left-side hitter Melissa Lewis and right-side hitter Kris Pesorda ended their tenure in the Brown and Orange ... the quartet formed two-thirds of the starting lineup this year, helping the Falcons to a 21-win season and a berth in the MAC Tournament semifinals ... they combined to start 129 matches this season and 366 over the last four years ... the four teamed for 3,346 kills, 3,099 assists, 3,454 digs and 988 blocks.
