Bowling Green, Ohio -
Bowling Green State University senior Melissa Lewis (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) has been named the Mid-American Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced today. Lewis earns P-O-W honors for the first time in her Falcon career.
Lewis, a left-side hitter, led the Falcons (9-8 overall, 3-3 MAC) to a perfect 3-0 week, with wins over Wright State, Kent and Ohio. On the week, she led the team in kills (68), kills per game (5.23), hitting percentage (.338), digs (46) and digs per game (3.54).
Lewis had a career-high 31 kills, just four off the school record, in Tuesday's (Oct. 5) five-game win at WSU. She also set a career high with 22 digs in the win, and hit 371 in the match.
Three days later (Oct. 8), Lewis again had 31 kills, and she hammered her 1,000th career kill that night in the win over Kent. Lewis, just the ninth player in BGSU history to register 1,000 career kills, now has 1,019 kills to rank eighth all-time.
Lewis has led the Falcons in kills in 14 of this season's 17 matches. On the season, she leads the team in hitting percentage (.281), kills (269), kills per game (4.56), service aces (19) and aces per game (0.32) and digs (175). She ranks second on the team in digs per game (2.97).
The Falcons complete a four-match homestand this weekend, facing arch-rival Toledo Friday (Oct. 15) and Central Michigan Saturday (Oct. 16). Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena.
