BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Sophomore Jill Conover had the match-winning goal and added two assists as the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team downed the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Friday afternoon (Oct. 27). The non-conference match was held at BGSU's Cochrane Field.
The win evens the Falcons' record at 8-8-1 overall, and enables the fourth-year team to tie the school record for victories. The visiting Phoenix drop to 5-11-0 on the season.
The BGSU team total of eight victories actually sets a new school record for wins in a regular season, as the previous seasonal record of 8-11-1, set in 1998, included a Mid-American Conference Tournament win.
Senior Jamie Eshleman got the scoring started Friday at the 19:03 mark, taking a Conover cross and directing the ball past UWGB goalkeeper Darci White. Senior Ashley Enser also drew an assist on the play.
For Eshleman, the goal was her second in the last two matches, and her second of the season. Eshleman, who scored in Sunday's (Oct. 22) match at Kent State, now has five career goals.
The match remained 1-0 until early in the second half, when the Phoenix tied the score. Kristin Lau, who leads the team in scoring, garnered her eighth goal of the season off of a semi-breakaway. Katie Uhalt drew the assist on the goal.
The contest remained deadlocked until Conover scored with just under 17 minutes remaining. Senior Janice Mentrup started the play by sending a ball into the penalty box from the right side. Sophomore Tracy Gleixner collected the cross and sent the ball toward goal. The ball deflected off a UWGB defender, and Conover shot and scored while lying on the ground.
For Conover, the goal was her team-leading fifth of the year. After her four-point afternoon, she now has eight assists and 18 points to lead the team in those departments as well.
Senior Michelle Lisy completed the scoring at the 82:21 mark, with Conover and Heller assisting. For Lisy, the goal was the 18th of her career, extending her own BGSU record.
Conover has tied her own school record for assists in a season. She also had eight helpers as a freshman last fall. She ranks second on the BGSU career list behind Mentrup, who picked up her 22nd career assist in Friday's win.
The Falcons outshot the Phoenix by a 24-7 margin, and BGSU held an 11-3 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore goalie Erika Flanders was called upon to make two saves, while UWGB's White made eight stops on the day.
There were a total of 39 fouls called in the physical match, with the Phoenix whistled for 22. BGSU had five corner kicks and did not allow a UWGB corner in the contest.
"We basically eked out a result through working hard," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "We did not play well in the first half, even though we got a good goal from Jamie Eshleman.
"We lacked the basics in terms of composure and possession, but we made a few halftime adjustments and looked much better in the second half. Making adjustments is the sign of a good team.
"Green Bay did a nice job. They were physical, they put us under pressure and they defended stoutly. It was great to see Michelle Lisy get a goal, and we had a very innovative finish from Jill Conover.
"I was delighted to see how well (sophomore defender) Heidi Williams played. She has waited patiently, and today, she took her chance when she got it, and played very well."
Williams played the longest stint of her career, entering the match with nine minutes left in the first half. She played the rest of the contest. She saw action in two matches last year, and Friday's match marked the second time she has played in 2000.
"Again, we did not play well in the first half, but we kept working at it," said Richards. "We were a much better team in the second half, and we will try to take that positive momentum into Sunday's match."
The Falcons will complete the regular season with Sunday's (Oct. 29) contest against Michigan State University. Start time for that match is 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field. The match is "Senior Day," with the team's seven seniors being honored before the contest. "Senior Day" festivities are scheduled to begin at approximately 12:40 p.m.
Following the MSU match, the Falcons will hit the road for the quarterfinal round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. BGSU, the seventh seed for the tourney, will head north to face second-seeded Eastern Michigan University Tuesday (Oct. 31). Start time for that match is 2:00 p.m. at EMU's Scicluna Field.
