BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Two second-half goals by Andrea Cunningham lifted Miami University to a 4-1 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Friday afternoon (Oct. 6). The Mid-American Conference match was held at BGSU's Cochrane Field.
With the win, Miami is now 7-4-0 overall and 5-1-0 in MAC play. BGSU drops to 5-6-0 and 3-3-0.
BGSU senior Ashley Enser had given the Falcons a lead with her second goal of the year at the 23:16 mark. Enser took a short crossing pass from junior Leslie Hepfinger and slid a shot to the far side of the net, past a diving Laura Degelleke and just inside the lower left corner of the goal.
The RedHawks equallized with a pretty goal with just 3:22 remaining in the first half. MU's Katie Milligan took a Cunningham pass and struck a curving shot. The ball, which appeared to be off target at first, curved into the upper left corner of the net past BGSU freshman Ashley Beel.
Cunningham gave the RedHawks the lead for good early in the second half. Sophomore Danielle Berkemeier lofted a cross from the left side of the pitch. Beel slipped while trying to catch the high cross, and the ball caromed directly to Cunningham, who fired it home at the 47:33 mark.
Cunningham scored an unassisted tally at 61:16. At first it appeared that her header was played off the line by a Falcon defender. But, the referee ruled that the ball had crossed the goal line, giving MU a 3-1 lead.
Berkemeier closed the scoring with an unassisted goal that capped an impressive individual effort. Her goal came at the 65:41 mark.
"We were beaten by a better team today," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "Having said that, though, I felt that we were the better team in the first half, and we deserved to go into the break with a lead.
"But, we conceded goals at bad times -- right before the half, right after the half, and then the disputed third goal. We can't afford to do that if we want to win.
"Give credit to our girls, though. (Miami) is the best team we have played all year, and we took it to them in the first half and were the better team. The stats tell the story, though, as we only got the one shot on goal. We tried to create, but we just didn't have the finished product.
"I was glad to see Ashley Beel get a few saves under her belt. She played a good game and was blameless on all four goals.
"Again, we played a very good team and held our own for 45 minutes, if not more. We will try to regroup and see if we can put forth a good effort against Ball State."
Miami outshot the Falcons by a 16-8 margin, and the RedHawks held a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal. Beel, making the first start of her collegiate career, made six saves in net, while Degelleke did not record a save on the day.
The Falcons will remain home for Sunday's (Oct. 8) MAC contest vs. Ball State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
