The Bowling Green State University hockey team won its 2000 exhibition contest over York University, 8-4, Friday night at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The Falcons took an early 1-0 lead 4:40 into the contest on a power-play goal by freshman Phil Barski, off an assist from classmate Brian Escobedo. The Yeomen tied the score at 10:47, and went ahead 2-1 with 32 seconds remaining in the opening period on a short-handed goal by Steve Quinn.
BG rebounded by scoring six times of 14 shots in the middle stanza. Ryan Wetterberg scored at 2:20 from Erik Eaton. Mark Wires scored his first of the night at 7:11 from Marc Barlow to put BG in front for good. Eaton scored 50 seconds later to make it 4-2 Falcons with Wetterberg and Scott Hewson garnering assists.
Rookie D'Arcy McConvey scored the game-winning goal at 9:10 of the second period with an unassisted short-handed goal. Ryan Fultz added a power-play goal at 12:03 off an assist from Greg Day. Wires completed the second period scoring with his marker at 17:58. Barski and Barlow assisted on Wires' second of the contest.
Falcon Grady Moore scored a power-play goal in between two York goals in the third period.
Tyler Masters started for BG and stopped 16 of 18 shots in 31:03 of action. Shawn Timm turned aside 20 of 22 shots in 28:57 of time between the BG pipes.
The Yeomen used one goalie each period: Jason Gaggi (nine saves in the first period), Paul Zarnett (eight saves in the second period), and Chris Bain (12 saves in the third period).
Bowling Green begins regular-season play next Friday and Saturday (Oct. 13-14) at Alabama-Huntsville. Face-off both nights is at 8 p.m. Eastern.
