CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University junior Caty Rommeck (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) has been named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office has announced. Rommeck shares this week's award with Akron's Ashlie Case.
Rommeck's award marks the sixth time this season that she has earned a league accolade, and the fifth time on the defensive side. Prior to this year, Melissa Lewis held the school mark for most P-O-W awards in a season, with three in 1999.
Rommeck, a middle hitter/blocker, helped the Falcons to a pair of road wins last week, including a victory at Buffalo that clinched a homecourt berth for the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament.
Rommeck had a whopping 3.33 blocks per game as the Falcons swept both Cleveland State and UB to increase the current winning streak to eight matches.
In addition to the 3.33 blocks, Rommeck averaged 1.50 digs per game. On the offensive side, she averaged 3.00 kills per game and had a hitting percentage of .375.
Rommeck had eight total blocks in the three-game win at CSU, then tied her career bests with five solo blocks and 12 total rejections in just three games at Buffalo.
The Falcons have had at least one player of the week in seven of the season's 12 weeks. In addition to Rommeck's six honors this season, freshman Susie Norris (Bascom, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) has twice earned league defensive P-O-W honors this year. Also, redshirt sophomore Kristin Gamby (Mt. Victory, Ohio/Marion Elgin) was the offensive winner on Oct. 16, and senior JoAnna Papageorgiou (Rock Island, Ill./Pleasant Valley [Iowa]) earned the offensive honor last week (Nov. 14).
The Falcons (21-8 overall, 12-6 MAC) of head coach Denise Van De Walle begin postseason play today (Nov. 21). BGSU, after finishing the regular season as co-champions of the MAC's East Division, earned the third seed for the MAC Tournament.
BGSU will host sixth-seeded Kent State University (14-14, 11-7 MAC) this afternoon at Anderson Arena. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
