REVIEWING THE ALASKA FAIRBANKS SERIES
BG played its sixth one-goal (or less) game in the last seven contests Saturday night at Alaska Fairbanks. The Nanooks scored once in each period to defeat the Falcons 3-2.
In Saturday's setback at UAF, the Nanooks scored the lone first period goal (at the 15:46 mark) when Jim Lawrence scored his third of the weekend off assists from Cam Keith and Blaine Bablitz.
UAF increased its lead to 2-0 at the 5:04 mark of the middle stanza when Bablitz scored his second of the year from Lawrence and Keith.
BG's Ryan Fultz scored his fourth of the year at 10:37 of the second period when he banged in a rebound of a Greg Day shot.
The Falcons scored the equalizer just 1:20 later as freshman Roger Leonard netted his first collegiate goal. Scott Hewson's check of a UAF defenseman forced a bad pass that Ryan Murphy intercepted and fed Leonard, who banged in his own rebound.
UAF's Ryan Reinheller scored exactly eight minutes into the third period for the game-winning goal.
Falcon goalie Tyler Masters made 19 saves, while UAF's Lance Mayes was credited with 17 stops. Both teams were held scoreless in three power-play attempts. The contest marked the first time this season BG held an opponent without a power-play goal.
BG played its fourth overtime game in the last six contests Friday night at Alaska Fairbanks as the teams skated to a 2-2 (overtime) tie.
BG junior center Greg Day scored his ninth goal of the campaign at the 8:48 mark of the opening period to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. It was only the second time this year BG had scored first in a game. Day's five-on-five goal was assisted by Ryan Fultz and Kevin Bieksa.
The Nanooks tied the game with a five-on-three power play goal with 22 seconds left in the first period. Jim Lawrence's goal was assisted by Blaine Bablitz and Daniel Carriere.
After a scoreless second period, BG's Curtis Valentine was credited with the Falcons' next goal at 6:04 of the third period when his centering pass deflected off a UAF defenseman's skate past Nanook goalie Preston McKay. Valentine was on his stomach some 15 feet away from the UAF cage.
UAF scored the equalizer as Lawrence netted his second of the game during a four-on-four situation.
BG goalie Shawn Timm was credited with a career-high 48 saves including 22 in the opening period. McKay made 31 saves for the Nanooks.
