BOWLING GREEN, O. - The Department of Athletics at Bowling Green State University celebrated the many accomplishments of its student-athletes and teams today at the annual Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon. Eighty-eight student-athletes were recognized for having a 3.5 or greater cumulative grade point average through the fall semester.
The most prestigious awards of the day, the Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards, were given to Zach Ham and Kristin Molnar. Juniors Joanna Papageorgiou and Doug Schueller won the Falcon Club Junior Athlete of the Year Awards.
Ham, an Architecture and Environmental Design major and member of the Ice Hockey team, is currently carrying a 3.87 grade point average. He was a four-year letter winner for the Falcons, and he was recently named to both the GTE District IV Academic First Team and the CCHA All-Academic First Team for the second consecutive year. He received the Jack Gregory (Scholar-Athlete) Award and the Howard Brown (Coaches') Award at this year's Ice Hockey team banquet. Ham is a native of Spokane, Wash.
Molnar, a four-year letterwinner for the Women's Gymnastics team, is also an Architecture and Environmental Design major. Throughout her four years at BGSU, she has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average. This would be quite a feat for any student at BG, but for a student-athlete who puts in countless hours practicing, competing, and traveling, it is even more impressive. Molnar is a native of North Olmsted, Ohio.
Other nominees for the Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year included Krista Davis of the Women's Volleyball team, Angela Michael of the Women's Cross Country and Track team, Ty Fowler from the Men's Soccer team, and Matt Marcum from the Baseball team.
Papageorgiou is a junior on the Women's Volleyball team and a Biology major at BGSU. She presently has a 3.81 grade point average, and she was an integral member of the 21-12 Falcons this past season. She was also named to the GTE Academic All-America District IV Third Team. Papageorgiou is a native of Rock Island, Ill.
A defenseman on the Ice Hockey team, Schueller is a Sport Management major at BGSU. With a grade point average of 3.54, he has not only impressed the faculty at BG, but he has also won the hearts of the fans. His hard work and dedication on and off of the ice won him this season's Rink Rat Award, which is given annually to the fans' favorite player.
Angie Farmer (Women's Basketball), Jennifer Jarjosa (Women's Swimming), Meghan Rhodes (Women's Tennis), Scott Dukate (Baseball), Andrew Guban (Men's Cross Country and Track), and Curtis Valentine (Ice Hockey) were also nominated for the Falcon Club Junior Athlete of the Year Award.
Teams were honored at the banquet, as well, for exemplary performance during the fall semester. The Outstanding Team Award for teams with 20 or more members was shared between the Women's Cross Country team, coached by Cami Wells, and the Women's Soccer team, coached by Andy Richards. Both teams sported a 3.20 grade point average for the semester. The Outstanding Team Award for teams with less than 20 members was given to Kurt Thomas and his Women's Golf team, who have an astounding 3.59 grade point average. The Most Improved Team Award went to the Women's Tennis team, coached by Penny Dean. Her team went from a 3.03 GPA in the Spring '99 semester to a 3.34 in the Fall '99 semester.
"All of these student-athletes have combined athleticism, dedication to their teams, and dedication to the university in their performances on and off of the field of play," said Vice President and Interim Provost Linda Dobb. "They are an inspiration to all of us."
Also honored at the luncheon was longtime supporter of Athletics and the Falcon Club, Joe Martini. Martini, the Bursar at BGSU, was recognized by Paul Krebs, Director of Athletics, for his efforts to meet the needs of student-athletes.
