CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University junior Caty Rommeck has been named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office has announced. Rommeck, a native of Sterling Heights, Mich., earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career.
Rommeck, a middle hitter/blocker, shared the league award with Ohio's Kris Whitfield. A BGSU player has won or shared the MAC D-P-O-W award in each of the first two weeks of the 2000 season, as freshman Susie Norris was the recipient last week (Sept. 5).
Rommeck earned the league honor after leading the Falcons to a 3-0 record and the tournament title at the UCF Fall Invitational in Orlando, Fla., last weekend (Sept. 8-9). She averaged two full blocks a game, and her 22 total blocks included 13 solo rejections. Rommeck had six solo blocks against both host UCF and Florida International. She also had 2.82 digs per game last weekend, including a pair of double-digit matches.
On offense, all Rommeck did was hit .402 for the weekend, with an average of 4.36 kills per game. She had a total of 48 kills and just seven attack errors in 102 total attempts, and hit a stellar .609 (16-2-23) in a three-game win over Western Carolina.
A transfer from Oakland University, Rommeck currently leads the Falcons in hitting percentage (.338), kills per game (4.26) and blocks per game (1.83) on the year.
The Falcons, now 4-2, will host the BGSU Invitational this weekend. Evansville, IUPUI, Illinois at Chicago will join the Falcons at Anderson Arena for the Friday-Saturday (Sept. 15-16) tourney, with Friday's action beginning at 5:00 p.m. and Saturday's first match commencing at 10:00 a.m.
