MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team got a goal and two assists from sophomore Jill Conover en route to a 3-1 win at Central Michigan University Friday afternoon (Sept. 15). The match marked the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams.
The three goals scored tied a season-high for BGSU, now 3-3 overall. In addition to Conover's performance, senior Janice Mentrup and sophomore Tracy Gleixner scored goals for the Falcons.
"This was a tremendous team performance," said first-year Falcon coach Andy Richards. "We played very, very well against a good CMU team. This is a big win for our program."
Conover, a native of Grand Island, N.Y., broke a scoreless tie with 2:13 remaining in the first half, sliding a left-footed shot underneath CMU goalkeeper Aryn McCumber. The goal was the third of the season for Conover.
Bowling Green increased its lead to 2-0 at the 50:16 mark when Mentrup scored her first goal of the campaign off a rebound of a Conover shot. The goal had Richards inventing words in his search to provide an accurate description.
"Janice stepped up and crackalated a shot into the top left-hand corner," said the coach.
The Chippewas would cut the lead in half as Jill Adams scored at the 54:32 mark off a free kick. Kjersten Kuhlman drew an assist.
But, the Falcons would regain their two-goal advantage at the 59:29 mark when Gleixner scored on a two-on-one with Conover garnering her second assist (and fourth point) of the match. Senior Ashley Enser started the play by sending a ball down the line to Conover.
The goal was Gleixner's third marker of the campaign and tied her with Conover for the team lead. Gleixner, who missed all of last season due to injury, has found the back of the net on all three of her shot attempts this fall.
Bowling Green sophomore goalkeeper Erika Flanders (Mason, Ohio/Mason) made eight saves, including six in the second half. For the Chippewas, McCumber made four saves, while Beth Quiney did not face a shot in nearly 10 minutes of relief.
The Falcons are idle until a road match vs. arch-rival Toledo next Friday (Sept. 22). That contest will begin at 4:00 p.m.
