CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University sophomore Erika Flanders has been named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the conference office has announced. Flanders, a goalkeeper on the women's soccer team, earns the honor for the first time in her BGSU career.
Flanders won the MAC award after leading the Falcons to a pair of road wins last weekend. She made seven saves in a 2-1 win at arch-rival Toledo Friday (Sept. 22), then made 10 stops in a 1-0, double-overtime shutout of preseason league favorite Eastern Michigan Sunday (Sept. 24).
Flanders' save total in that EMU match included a diving stop of a penalty-kick attempt by the Eagles' Brandy Jones. She also stopped an EMU shot from point-blank range with just over 30 seconds remaining.
Flanders has helped the Falcons to a 5-3-0 overall record and the first 3-0 MAC start in school history. Just a sophomore, she already holds the school career records in nearly every goalkeeping category, including victories, saves and shutouts.
Flanders has a 3.53 cumulative grade point average as an art education major.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week award is presented to one male and one female each week. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and have performed well during the past week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
The Falcons will open the home portion of the schedule Friday (Sept. 29), taking on Northern Illinois University in a 2:00 p.m. kickoff at Cochrane Field.
