BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team saw a season-high, three-match winning streak come to an end Friday afternoon (Oct. 12), as Eastern Michigan University recorded a 3-0 win over the Falcons. The Mid-American Conference match was held at Cochrane Field.
With the win, EMU improves to 9-4-0 overall and 4-3-0 in MAC play, while the Falcons fall to 7-4-2 and 2-3-1, respectively.
The visiting Eagles got on the board with just under 16 minutes elapsed. EMU forward Amanda Kulikowski went down in the box, and a penalty kick was awarded. The Eagles' JoAnne Saltsman converted what would prove to be the match-winning goal at 15:57.
Eastern doubled the lead at the 28:31 mark, while Michele Lawrence's through ball found Jessica Hupe on the left side of the box. Hupe's subsequent shot beat BGSU junior Erika Flanders to the far (right) side of the goal, as Flanders was forced to come out of the net to contest the shot.
In the second half, the Eagles got an insurance goal from Kelly Still at 71:52. Hupe had the lone assist on the goal.
BGSU actually had a 22-13 advantage in shot attempts, including a 17-6 margin in the second half. The Falcons had eight shots on goal to the Eagles' six in the match.
EMU goalkeeper Nikki Allen made eight saves in net to earn the shutout. Flanders had three saves for the home team, which was blanked for just the second time in 13 matches this year.
"Missed opportunities -- that was the key today," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "We outshot them and we had more opportunities than they did, particularly in the second half. But, we didn't finish our chances.
"The most important statistic is goals scored. We've had other games where we were outshot, but we finished our chances. The reverse was true today.
"Sometimes, you have got to find that little extra determination and quality. Eastern did that, we did not. We need to put today behind us and get ready for Sunday."
The Brown and Orange will return to action Sunday (Oct. 14), concluding a five-match homestand with a 1:00 p.m. match vs. Central Michigan. BGSU's senior class will be recognized in ceremonies prior to the match.
