BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Allison Campbell scored twice to help Central Michigan University to a 4-1 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday (Oct. 14). The Mid-American Conference match was held at BGSU's Cochrane Field.
CMU improves to 7-5-1 overall and 6-2 in MAC play, while the Falcons fall to 7-5-2 and 2-4-1, respectively.
Freshman Kristy Coppes scored BGSU's lone goal of the match, which gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead at the 5:13 mark. Classmate Jenny Berlovan had an assist on the goal.
Coppes took Berlovan's pass and made a nifty move on her CMU defender. The BGSU freshman took a dribble to the left, sharply cut back to her right to create space and blasted a shot past Central goalkeeper Kari Alexander.
Coppes now has 11 goals on the season, just one away from the school record. Teammate Tracy Gleixner scored 12 goals in her freshman year of 1998. Coppes' total of 24 points is five shy of Gleixner's single-season record total.
Anne Fedrigo equalized for the Chippewas at the 16:32 mark. A cross by Sabrina Borgquist sailed through the box, as a CMU teammate attempted to head it past BG 'keeper Erika Flanders, but could not get to the ball. But, Fedrigo tracked down the ball, and her one-time turnaround shot spun into the far upper corner of the goal.
Then, a foul was called on BGSU as two players challenged for a header at the 28:04 mark. The foul occurred inside the box, and CMU was awarded a penalty kick. Campbell converted to give CMU the lead for good.
Campbell scored again midway through the second half, after an errant BGSU goal-kick attempt. Emilie VilleMonte trapped the kick and quickly played the ball to a streaking Campbell, who went in all alone and gave the visitors a two-goal lead at 62:43
Ten minutes later, Jennifer Williamson completed the scoring. Olina Vidarsdottir took a shot that Flanders blocked, but the ball squirted along the goal line. Williamson fired the ball into the open net.
The Chippewas enjoyed a 24-9 advantage in shot attempts, including a 13-2 margin in the first half. CMU had 11 shots on goal to the Falcons' six.
Flanders made six saves in 78:31 of action, giving her an even 100 saves on the year. Freshman Ali Shingler stopped the only CMU shot on goal in her 11:29 of work.
At the other end of the field, Alexander made four stops.
"Kristy Coppes scored a great goal today," said BGSU coach Andy Richards. "She was very quick with her feet and dynamic in front of the goal. It was one of the best of her 11 goals this season. It was a fantastic finish, and gave us a great start.
"As a team, I think we're still developing. Part of that development includes making better decisions on the field, both individually and collectively. Those decisions need to be better, particularly when you're playing good teams as we did over the weekend.
"We will look forward to Friday."
On Friday (Oct. 19), the Falcons will venture to Huntington, W. Va., to take on Marshall University under the lights. Beginning with that MU match, scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m., BGSU will play four of the last five regular season matches on the road.
