The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, having completed a five-match homestand, now prepares to play the bulk of the remaining schedule away from home. The Falcons (7-5-2, 2-4-1 Mid-American Conference) of head coach Andy Richards will hit the road for a pair of weekend matches, beginning with a Friday (Oct. 19) match at Marshall University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Sam Hood Field.
Following the MU contest, the Brown and Orange will head to Athens for a Sunday (Oct. 21) contest against Ohio University. Starting time for that match is 1:00 p.m. at Shafer Street Field.
The Falcons will end the regular season with four of five matches on the road. The lone remaining match at Cochrane Field is a contest against Kent State University, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 26.
HEAD COACH ANDY RICHARDS: Andy Richards is in his second year as a head coach, and has a record of 17-15-3 heading into the MU match. Richards, who came to BGSU after five years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University, was hired in April of 2000.
Ashlee Orr was named the BGSU assistant coach in late August of 2000.
DOMINANCE IN THE DARK? The Falcons' Friday match at Marshall marks the third time BGSU will play under the lights this season ... BGSU is 2-0-0 with a pair of shutouts in night contests so far in 2001 ... the Brown and Orange won at both Wisconsin-Green Bay (Aug. 31) and Ohio State (Sept. 18) by 2-0 scores.
THE OPPONENTS: Marshall enters the week with an overall record of 6-6-1 ... the Thundering Herd brings a MAC mark of 3-4-1 into Friday's BGSU match ... last weekend, MU split a pair of home matches, posting a 1-0 upset of first-place Buffalo Friday (Oct. 12), but losing to Miami by a 3-0 count Sunday (Oct. 14) ... the Miami loss marked the first at Sam Hood Field this year for the Herd (4-1-1 at home) ... sophomore Amanda McMahon leads the team with eight assists and 14 points this fall ... she is one of five players tied for the team lead with three goals ... in net, freshman Ashleigh Woods has started all but one match ... she has a goals-against average of 0.92 ... last year, the Herd went 8-10-1 overall and 3-7-1 in league action ... head coach Teresa Patterson has a record of 24-39-6 in her fourth year, all in Huntington ... the school's athletic web site is www.herdzone.com.
Ohio enters the weekend with an overall record of 6-6-0, and the Bobcats will take a 5-2-0 MAC record into Friday's (Oct. 19) home contest with Toledo ... last weekend, OU posted a 2-0 win over Miami Friday, before falling to first-place UB by a 1-0 count Sunday ... the 'Cats, like Marshall, had been undefeated at home prior to Sunday's action ... OU will check into the UT match with a 4-1-0 mark at Shafer Street Field ... individually, sophomore Christel Schiering leads the team in scoring ... she has seven of OU's 16 goals on the year, and has a total of 15 points ... in goal, senior Vanessa Dennis has started 10 matches, and has a 1.28 GAA ... last year, Ohio went 10-9-0 overall and 7-4-0 in MAC action ... Stacy Strauss is 16-15-0 in her second year, both with the Bobcats and as a head coach ... the school's athletic web site is www.ohiobobcats.com.
THE SERIES: The Falcons hold a 2-0-1 lead over Marshall in the all-time series between the teams, and BGSU is 1-0-1 in previous matches in Huntington ... the Falcons won the first-ever match between the schools, 2-0 (Oct. 16, 1998), as Tracy Gleixner had a goal and an assist and Beth Wechsler added an assist ... the Falcons scored twice in the last 3:18 of regulation in the teams' next meeting, a 3-3 tie (Oct. 10, 1999) ... Wechsler, Jill Conover and Mandy Smith all had assists in that match ... last year, Conover's overtime goal gave BG a 1-0 win at Cochrane Field (Oct. 13, 2000) ... Smith and Wechsler assisted on that goal, and Erika Flanders earned the shutout.
BGSU trails Ohio by a 3-0-1 count in that series, and the Bobcats have a win and a tie in the previous matches in Athens ... Ohio won a 2-0 home decision three years ago (Oct. 18, 1998), and the teams played a scoreless tie the following season (Oct. 8, 1999) ... the Bobcats won the other two matches, both at Cochrane Field, by scores of 4-0 (Oct. 26, 1997) and 1-0 (Oct. 15, 2000).
RECAPPING LAST WEEK: The Falcons went 1-2 in three home matches ... BGSU used a pair of goals less than five minutes apart for a 2-1 win over Wright State Tuesday (Oct. 9) ... seniors Mandy Smith and Beth Wechsler scored those goals ... Eastern Michigan came to Cochrane and got a 3-0 win over the Falcons Friday (Oct. 12), while Central Michigan downed the Brown and Orange, 4-1, Sunday (Oct. 14) ... freshman Kristy Coppes had the lone Falcon goal in the latter match.
ANOTHER SCORELESS STREAK FOR FLANDERS: Wright State's goal late in the second half of Tuesday's match broke a scoreless streak of 212:03 for the Falcon defense ... additionally, the goal broke a personal shutout streak of 266:55 for junior goalkeeper Erika Flanders ... the latter mark is a school record ... Flanders now owns the top five individual shutout streaks in BGSU annals.
CONSECUTIVE SHUTOUT MINUTES
266:55 Erika Flanders, 9/30-10/9/01 245:55 Erika Flanders, 10/1-15/00 242:08 Erika Flanders, 9/2-9/00 216:22 Erika Flanders, 9/5-18/99 213:28 Erika Flanders, 9/22-29/00
COPPES CONTINUES TO CONVERT: Freshman Kristy Coppes has shown a knack for finding the back of the net ... she scored a nifty goal in Sunday's Central Michigan match, for her 11th tally of the season ... her goal total is the second-most in a season in school history, just one away from tying Tracy Gleixner's school record (12 in 1998) ... Coppes has 24 points, the second-highest seasonal total in BG annals ... Gleixner had 29 points in that 1998 season.
BGSU SCORING LISTS -- UPDATES: Several current Falcons continue to move up the school's career scoring lists ... junior Jill Conover has taken over the BGSU career scoring lead ... her seven points vs. Youngstown State (tying the single-match record) give her 55 points for her career ... junior Tracy Gleixner had two goals in that match to move past Michelle Lisy (1997-2000) and assume the top spot with 20 career goals ... Gleixner tied Lisy for second place on the points list, with 48 ... Conover's three assists vs. YSU (again, tying the single-match record) give her 23 for her career, equalling Janice Mentrup's (1997-2000) school-record total ... all three lists follow:

CAPTAIN'S LOG: Seniors Leslie Hepfinger, Mandy Smith and Beth Wechsler are BGSU's tri-captains for the 2001 season ... Hepfinger saw action in Sunday's Central Michigan contest after missing the previous seven matches due to injury ... Smith and Wechsler are two of the six Falcons to have started all 14 matches this year.

BGSU IN THE MAC STANDINGS: The Falcons enter the week in 11th place in the Mid-American Conference standings ... the top eight teams make the MAC Tournament ... of BGSU's five remaining matches, three are against the teams directly ahead of the Falcons in the league standings (Ball State, Marshall, Kent State).
NOTING THE FALCONS: BGSU finished the non-conference portion of the schedule with a record of 5-1-1, including a perfect 3-0 home mark vs. non-league foes ... overall, the Falcons are now 4-3-1 at Cochrane Field this season, with one regular-season home match left ... the total of four wins matches the school mark for most home wins in a single season ... interestingly, last year's team, which set a school record with 10 overall wins, is the only squad in the five-year history of the program to win fewer than four contests at home (3-5-0) ... the win over Wright State made the Falcons 7-3-2 at the time, which put BGSU four games over .500 for the first time in school history ... the Eastern Michigan match ended a four-match streak in which the Falcons had given up one goal or less in each contest ... six Falcons - seniors Mandy Smith and Beth Wechsler, juniors Jill Conover and Erika Flanders, sophomore Kasey Freeman and freshman Beth Rieman - have started all 14 matches this season ... freshman Nikki Pucillo had five assists in a three-match span, culminating with the Wright State contest ... Pucillo is tied with Conover for the team lead in that category (six) ... the Falcons outshot the opponent just once in the first nine contests of the season, but have had more shots than the other team in three of the last five matches ... on the year, the Falcons have been outshot by a 226-182 margin, and the opponents have a 124-88 advantage in shots on goal ... but, BGSU has outscored opponents, 31-21, this season ... junior Erika Flanders has made an even 100 saves on the year (and freshman Ali Shingler has three), while opposing 'keepers have a total of 57 stops ... Flanders is on pace to break her own record for saves in a season ... she set the mark with 118 saves last year ... Flanders owns the school's career records for wins (22), saves (309), complete-match shutouts (10) and goals-against average (1.62).
