FALCONS SPLIT, 1-1 ON THE WEEK
The Bowling Green State University volleyball team (7-2, 1-1 MAC) split a pair of matches last week, defeating the Oakland Grizzlies last Tuesday in three games (30-27, 30-24, 30-20). Friday night, the Falcons lost their first MAC match, losing to Northern Illinois in three games (25-30, 19-30, 16-30).
This week, the Falcons play two conference road matches, meeting Buffalo on October 5 (7:00 p.m.) and Akron on October 6 (7:00 p.m.). BG will host Kent State for their second home match of the season on October 10 (7:00 p.m.). The Falcons are back on the road for the weekend, playing Toledo (Oct. 12) and Eastern Michigan (Oct. 13).
HEAD COACH DENISE VAN DE WALLE
Denise Van De Walle, the dean of MAC mentors, is in her 19th season with the Falcons, and has an overall record of 345-223. Her 21 wins with BG last season enabled her to surpass Miami's Carolyn Condit as the winningest coach in MAC history. Her 158 MAC wins entering the Buffalo match ranks her third all-time.
Kris Pesorda, a former BG standout, is in her second season as assistant coach for the Falcons. The 2000 season student assistant for the Brown and Orange, Sean Huiet, is in his first season as assistant coach.
LAST WEEK
The Falcons won their seventh match of the season, defeating the Oakland Grizzlies (Sept. 25) in three games (30-27, 30-24, 30-20), before losing to conference opponent Northern Illinois (25-30, 19-30, 16-30) on Saturday.
THE OPPONENTS
Last week, Buffalo played Toledo and Northern Illinois in two conference match-ups. The Bulls were defeated in both games 3-0, moving to 2-9 overall and 0-4 in the MAC. Coach Nadine Lilavois is in her third season with Buffalo. She welcomes back eight letterwinners, including five starters.
Akron also had two conference matches last week, meeting Ball State on the road and Toledo at home. The Zips were defeated in both matches, losing to Ball State 3-0 and Toledo 3-2. Akron moves to 8-3 overall and 2-2 in the MAC. Coach Mike Sweitzer is in his eleventh season with the Zips and welcomes back eight letterwinners, including four starters.
THE SERIES
Bowling Green leads the series against Buffalo, 5-0-0. The Falcons swept last year's meetings, both in three games.
BG also leads the series against Akron with a 15-8-0 record, including a 7-3 mark in matches played in Akron. The teams split last year's meetings, with the road team winning in four games in each case. The visiting team has won 10 of the last eleven meetings.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK
In the non-conference game of the weekend series, BG defeated Oakland in three games (Sept. 25). Caty Rommeck led the team with 10 kills, eight digs and ten total blocks ...Setter Sara Sikorski had 38 assists, as well as five kills, two service aces and five total blocks...BG lost their first conference match 3-0 against Northern Illinois Friday night (Sept. 28)...BG was led by Caty Rommeck and Kristin Gamby's 15 and seven kills, respectively...Natalie Becker posted 28 assists in the loss.
LEADERS OF THE MAC
The Falcons have several players among the various category leaders in the Mid-American Conference statistics as of September 30, 2001...Senior Caty Rommeck is fourth in the league in hitting percentage with .354, first in the MAC in both blocks (1.52) and kills per game (4.70) and thirteenth in digs (2.79)...Senior Natalie Becker averages 12.17 assists, good for third in the MAC... Sophomore Laura Twyman is eighth in the MAC in blocks with a 1.03 average...Junior Kristin Gamby is twelfth in the MAC with a 3.65 kills per game average...As a team, the Falcons are second in the league in blocks (2.61)...BGSU ranks ninth in digs (14.21) and fourth in hitting pct. (.226) and fifth in assists (13.58)...The Falcons are sixth in kills (14.85) and 11th in service aces (1.33) for the 2001 season.
