The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, after playing a pair of Mid-American Conference matches on the road last weekend, returns home for the final regular-season contest at Cochrane Field this season. The Falcons (7-7-2, 2-6-1 Mid-American Conference) of head coach Andy Richards will face Kent State University in a Friday (Oct. 26) match, with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Cochrane.
Following the KSU contest, the Brown and Orange will venture to Oxford for a Sunday (Oct. 28) contest against Miami University. Starting time for that match is 2:00 p.m. at the Miami Soccer Field.
After this weekend's action, the Falcons will have just one regular-season match remaining. BGSU will complete the schedule with a match at Ball State University on Nov. 1. Should the Falcons qualify for the MAC Tournament, the Brown and Orange would head to a site to be determined for a quarterfinal match on Nov. 6.
Last weekend, BGSU suffered a pair of road losses, to Marshall (3-1, Oct. 19) and Ohio (3-0, Oct. 21).
HEAD COACH ANDY RICHARDS: Andy Richards is in his second year as a head coach, and has a record of 17-17-3 heading into the MU match. Richards, who came to BGSU after five years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University, was hired in April of 2000.
Ashlee Orr was named the BGSU assistant coach in late August of 2000.
COPPES TIES SEASONAL RECORD FOR GOALS: Freshman Kristy Coppes scored her 12th goal of the season in the Marshall match ... she has tied Tracy Gleixner's single-season school record in that category ... Gleixner had 12 goals in her freshman season, 1998 ... this year, Coppes has 26 points, the second-highest seasonal total in BG annals ... Gleixner had 29 points in that 1998 campaign.
THE OPPONENTS: Kent State enters the week with an overall record of 4-10-0 ... the Golden Flashes will bring a MAC mark of 3-7-0 into Friday's BGSU match ... last weekend, KSU dropped a pair of close matches on the road ... Kent lost a 2-1 decision at Eastern Michigan Friday (Oct. 19), on a goal with 2:14 remaining, then fell in overtime, 1-0, at Central Michigan Sunday (Oct. 21) ... sophomore Lauren Caminati leads the team with five goals and 11 points this season ... junior goalkeeper Lindsey Mitchell has played in 12 of KSU's 14 matches, and has a goals-against average of 2.20 ... last year, the Flashes went 8-8-1 overall and 4-7-0 in league action ... Rob Marinaro is in his first season as a collegiate head coach, after four years as KSU's assistant ... the school's athletic web site is www.kent.edu/athletics.
Miami enters the week with an overall record of 10-5-0, and the RedHawks will take a 7-2-0 MAC record into Friday's (Oct. 26) home contest with Ball State ... last weekend, MU posted a pair of home shutouts, beating Northern Illinois, 2-0, Friday (Oct. 19) and Western Michigan by a 4-0 count two days later ... MU has a home record of 3-2-0 ... juniors Andrea Cunningham and Danielle Berkemeier have scored the bulk of the team's goals this year ... Cunningham has a team-high 11 goals and 25 total points, while Berkemeier has eight goals, a team-best eight assists and 24 points ... in goal, junior Katie Karlander has a 9-3-0 record and a GAA of 0.95 ... last year, Miami went 13-8-0 overall and 7-4-0 in MAC action ... Bobby Kramig has a record of 52-37-4 in his fifth year as MU's women's coach, and is 65-40-4 in his sixth year overall ... those records do not include Kramig's 16 years as the coach of Miami's men's team ... the school's athletic web site is www.MURedHawks.com.
THE SERIES: The Falcons hold a 3-1-1 lead over Kent State in the all-time series between the teams, but that one loss came last year ... KSU posted a 3-1 home win over BGSU last Oct. 22 ... BG is 2-0-1 lifetime vs. Kent at Cochrane Field ... the Falcons recorded a pair of shutout wins in 1997, 1-0 in overtime at Kent in the first-ever match for either program (Aug. 29, 1997), and 2-0 in BG on Oct. 17 ... the teams battled to a 1-1 tie the next year (Sept. 27, 1998), and the Falcons won a 2-0 decision on Sept. 15, 1999, with Jill Conover getting a goal and an assist and Erika Flanders earning the shutout ... Conover also had an assist in last year's match.
BGSU trails Miami by a 5-0 count in that series ... the RedHawks have posted three one-goal victories, including one in last year's MAC Tournament Championship match (Nov. 5, 2000) ... MU won that match by a 1-0 score in the second overtime period ... the RedHawks won last year's regular-season match in BG by a 4-1 count (Oct. 6, 2000), the only 2000 match in which Flanders did not see action ... Leslie Hepfinger had an assist on the BG goal that day ... in the only other match at Cochrane Field MU posted a 2-1 decision in 1998 (Oct. 30) ... Tracy Gleixner had the Falcon goal, with Beth Wechsler drawing an assist ... MU has posted a pair of victories in Oxford, by scores of 3-2 (Oct. 11, 1997) and 3-1 (Oct. 3, 1999) ... Hepfinger had an assist in the latter match.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK: The Falcons dropped a pair of road contests over the weekend ... BGSU fell at Marshall by a 3-1 count Friday (Oct. 19) ... freshman Kristy Coppes scored the lone Falcon goal, with classmate Katie Piening drawing an assist ... on Sunday (Oct. 21), Ohio downed the Brown and Orange by a 3-0 result.
BGSU SCORING LISTS - UPDATES: Several current Falcons are ranked on the school's career scoring lists ... junior Jill Conover has taken over the BGSU career scoring lead ... her seven points vs. Youngstown State Oct. 3 (tying the single-match record) give her 55 points for her career ... junior Tracy Gleixner had two goals in that match to move past Michelle Lisy (1997-2000) and assume the top spot with 20 career goals ... Gleixner tied Lisy for second place on the points list, with 48 ... Conover's three assists vs. YSU (again, tying the single-match record) give her 23 for her career, equalling Janice Mentrup's (1997-2000) school-record total ... all three lists follow:

BGSU IN THE MAC STANDINGS: The Falcons enter the week in 12th place in the Mid-American Conference standings ... the top eight teams make the MAC Tournament ... BGSU is six points behind eighth-place Toledo ... teams get three points for a win and one for a tie ... the Falcons need at least two wins in the last three matches to have a chance to qualify for the league tourney ... Toledo has one MAC match remaining, vs. Akron ... should the Rockets win that match, the Falcons would need to go 3-0 in the remaining matches to tie with UT ... the Falcons and Rockets played to a 2-2 tie in their meeting (Sept. 9), meaning that other tiebreakers would come into play should the teams finish deadlocked for the final spot ... of course, this scenario does not take into account outcomes for the teams currently ranked ninth through 11th ... the complete MAC standings, with recent results and remaining schedules for each school, can be found later in this release.
NOTING THE FALCONS: BGSU finished the non-conference portion of the schedule with a record of 5-1-1, including a perfect 3-0 home mark vs. non-league foes ... overall, the Falcons are 4-3-1 at Cochrane Field this season, with one regular-season home match left ... the total of four wins matches the school mark for most home wins in a single season ... interestingly, last year's team, which set a school record with 10 overall wins, is the only squad in the five-year history of the program to win fewer than four contests at home (3-5-0) ... prior to last weekend's two losses, the Falcons had been 7-2-2 in road matches (and 8-4-2 in all contests away from home) since Sept. 15, 2000 ... six Falcons - seniors Mandy Smith and Beth Wechsler, juniors Jill Conover and Erika Flanders, sophomore Kasey Freeman and freshman Beth Rieman - have started all 16 matches this season ... on the year, the Falcons have been outshot by a 271-193 margin, and the opponents have a 145-94 advantage in shots on goal ... but, BGSU has outscored opponents, 32-27, this season ... junior Erika Flanders has made 115 saves on the year (and freshman Ali Shingler has three), while opposing 'keepers have a total of 62 stops ... Flanders is very close to breaking her own record for saves in a season ... she set the mark with 118 saves last year ... Flanders owns the school's career records for wins (22), saves (324), complete-match shutouts (10) and goals-against average (1.67).
