OXFORD, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to Miami University Sunday afternoon (Oct. 28). The Mid-American Conference match was held at the Miami Soccer Field.
With the loss, the Falcons fall to 7-9-2 overall and 2-8-1 in MAC action. Miami improves to 11-5-1 and 8-2-1, respectively.
In a rematch of last year's MAC Championship contest, the RedHawks got on the board at the 15:28 mark. Amanda Cunningham scored on a shot that deflected off a Falcon defender. The home team took that 1-0 lead into the halftime break, and the score stayed the same until the 76:10 mark.
At that point, MU doubled the lead on a header by Danielle Berkemeier. Then, Laura Freel's goal, which came 5:33 after Berkemeier's score, provided insurance for the RedHawks.
Miami outshot the Falcons by a 12-8 margin, but BGSU held a 5-4 advantage in the shots-on-goal department. RedHawk goalkeeper Katie Karlander made five saves on the afternoon to earn the shutout, while BGSU junior Erika Flanders made one stop to increase her school-record seasonal total to 124.
MU held a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks and committed 20 fouls to BGSU's 11.
"I think the game was a lot tighter than the scoreline suggests," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "I'm very proud of the effort, commitment and work rate that all of our players put into today's game. They worked as a cohesive group to get a win against a good Miami team.
"Unfortunately, the quality of our finishing was the difference between the two teams. We had three excellent chances in the first half, which we didn't put away, and another one in the second half.
"We had more shots on goal than they did, but obviously, they scored on three of their chances, and we couldn't score a one. So, as happy as I am with things like our intensity, effort, commitment and work rate, once again we've come up short, in terms of the quality of our finishing.
"That's the reason we lost the game today."
The Falcons will close the 2001 season with a Thursday (Nov. 1) match at Ball State University.
