FALCONS HOST KENT STATE, HEAD TO TOLEDO AND EMU
This week, the Falcons open with their second conference home match on Wednesday (Oct. 10) at 7:00 p.m. against Kent State. They then play two conference road matches, meeting Toledo on October 12 (7:00 p.m.) and Eastern Michigan on October 13 (3:00 p.m.). The Falcons are back to Anderson Arena on October 16, starting a three match home stint with IPFW (7:00 p.m.). BG plays Miami October 19 (7:00 p.m.) and Marshall October 20 (7:00 p.m.).
The Bowling Green State University volleyball team (8-3, 2-2 MAC) split a pair of matches last week, defeating the Buffalo Bulls last Friday in five games (30-27, 30-21, 28-30, 27-30, 15-6). This was the sixth time in a row that the Falcons have defeated the Bulls since they entered the MAC in 1998. Saturday night, the Falcons lost to Akron in a conference match-up losing in three games (25-30, 27-30, 30-32).
HEAD COACH DENISE VAN DE WALLE
Denise Van De Walle, the dean of MAC mentors, is in her 19th season with the Falcons, and has an overall record of 346-222. Her 21 wins with BG last season enabled her to surpass Miami's Carolyn Condit as the winningest coach in MAC history. Her 159 MAC wins entering the Kent State match ranks her third all-time.
Kris Pesorda, a former BG standout, is in her second season as assistant coach for the Falcons. The 2000 season student assistant for the Brown and Orange, Sean Huiet, is in his first season as assistant coach.
LAST WEEK
The Falcons won their eighth match of the season, defeating MAC oppenent Buffalo Bulls (Oct. 5) in five games (30-27, 30-21, 28-30, 27-30, 15-6), before losing to another conference opponent Akron in three games (25-30, 27-30, 30-32) on Saturday.
THE OPPONENTS
Last week, Kent State had three conference matches, losing to Akron 2-3 and Northern Illinois 1-3, before defeating Ohio in three straight games. The Golden Flashes move to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the MAC. Coach Mora Kanim is in her fifth year at Kent and welcomes back seven letterwinners, including four starters.
Toledo had three home matches last week, including two conference matchups. The Rockets opened the week with a loss to Notre Dame, 2-3 before their conference matches. Toledo defeated Marshall 3-2 before losing to Northern Illinois 3-2. The Rockets move to 8-5 overall and 4-3 in the MAC. Head coach Kent Miller is in his fifth year at Toledo and welcomes back eleven letterwinners, including six starters.
Eastern Michigan had two conference matches this weekend, defeating both Marshall (3-0) and Western Michigan (3-2) to move to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in the MAC. Coach Kim Berrington is in her sixth year at Eastern Michigan and welcomes back seven letterwinners, including three starters.
THE SERIES
Bowling Green leads the series against Kent State, 34-12. Kent State took two of the three matches they played last season.
BG also leads the series against Toledo, 39-8. The two teams split last season, each taking the match win in three games.
The Falcons lead the series over the Eagles, 24-15. Bowling Green won the lone match last season in three games.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK
In the first game of the weekend, BG defeated Buffalo 3-2 (Oct.5)...The Falcons were led by Caty Rommeck's 22 kills, three service aces, eight digs and eight total blocks...Setter Natalie Becker had 49 assists as well as three kills, a service ace, six digs and two block assists...Shyann Robinson and Kristin Gamby posted 14 and 13 kills respectively... Robinson also had a career high three service aces, while Gamby had eight total blocks in the win...In the loss against Akron, Bowling Green was led by Caty Rommeck's 17 kills and seven total blocks, as well as ten digs in the loss...Natalie Becker led the team with 31 assists and thirteen digs, as well as posting three kills and a block assist.
LEADERS OF THE MAC
The Falcons have several players among the various category leaders in the Mid-American Conference statistics as of October 8, 2001...Senior Caty Rommeck is third in the league in hitting percentage with .338, first in the MAC in kills per game (4.73), second in blocks (1.59) and fifteenth in digs (2.68)...Senior Natalie Becker averages 11.71 assists, good for fifth in the MAC... Sophomore Laura Twyman is twelfth in the MAC in blocks with a 0.97 average...Junior Kristin Gamby is tenth in the MAC with a 3.44 kills per game average...As a team, the Falcons are third in the league in blocks (2.76)...BGSU ranks ninth in digs (14.21) and sixth in hitting pct. (.215) and sixth in assists (13.27)...The Falcons are seventh in kills (14.71) and 12th in service aces (1.41) for the 2001 season.
ROMMECK MOVES UP
Following the Akron game, Caty Rommeck's performance moves her higher in the Bowling Green career records list. Her 790 total kills makes her 11th on the all-time list...her 89 block solos move her from tenth to eighth, while her 235 block assists move her to tenth...Her 324 total blocks places her ninth on the all-time list.
