BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University redshirt sophomore Laura Twyman has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District University Division Volleyball Team, it was announced today. Twyman, who earns academic all-district honors for the first time in her career, was named to the third team.
Twyman carries a perfect 4.00 grade point average as an accounting major. On the court, she entered Friday's match at Kent State University with a hitting percentage of .245 and an average of 1.05 blocks per game. She played in each of the Falcons' first 24 matches of the season, making five starts.
The 2001 Verizon Academic All-District IV University Division Team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
The Verizon Academic All-District Team is part of the Verizon Academic All-America program. First team selections will appear on the national ballot for the Verizon Academic All-America Women's Volleyball team.
This year marks the 50th year of the Academic All-America program, as the inaugural team was announced on December 6, 1952. Since that time, more than 12,000 students have been named Academic All-America team members at colleges and universities at all levels for every recognized NCAA sport. The program's popularity resulted in a significant expansion for the current academic year, as 816 student athletes -- a 19 percent increase over the previous highest number -- will be selected to 12 different Academic All-America teams during the 2001-02 academic season.
The Falcons defeated Kent State in five games Friday night (Nov. 16), giving BG a 20-victory season for the third year in a row. The win, coupled with Akron's loss to Ohio, moved the Falcons into sole possession of first place in the Mid-American Conference's East Division, a game ahead of the Zips.
BGSU hosts Toledo in the final regular-season match Saturday night (Nov. 17) at 7:00 p.m., then will host a MAC Tournament quarterfinal match on Tuesday (Nov. 20). The Falcons have clinched at least a tie for the East Division crown. A win over UT Saturday would give BGSU the outright divisional title and the number-two seed for the MAC Tournament.
