BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Ball State University scored three fifth-inning runs to break a scoreless tie en route to a 3-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University softball team Tuesday (April 24). The game, the opener of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader, was held at the BGSU Softball Field.
BSU's Marcy Mobley threw a complete-game one-hitter to get the win, while Falcon hurler McKenna Houle took the loss despite tossing a complete-game two-hitter.
Houle and Mobley combined on a double no-hitter through three innings, before BSU's Kasey Angulo beat out a grounder to shortstop with one out in the top of the fourth. Houle struck out the next two batters to leave Angulo stranded at first.
The Cardinals broke through in the top of the fifth frame, scoring three runs on just one hit. Carrie Lively got that hit, leading off the inning with a single. Janice Campbell's sacrifice bunt sent pinch-runner Mandy Snyder to second, and Abby Willis drew a walk. Then, Robin Martin reached when a grounder to short was mishandled for an error, loading the bases.
With BSU's Katie Shea at the plate, a wild pitch by Houle allowed Snyder to score the game's first run. On the very next pitch, a passed ball allowed pinch-runner Kris Burdine to cross the plate. Shea then grounded out, with Martin scoring from third.
BGSU senior Lynsey Ebel led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk, breaking a string of 12 consecutive batters retired by Mobley. The next batter, sophomore Libby Voshell, hit one of the hardest balls of the game, a liner back up the middle that Mobley grabbed. The Cardinal pitcher then got the next two batters to hit into a fielder's choice and a flyout, respectively.
In the sixth, senior Jen Domschot finally broke up the no-hit bid with a bloop single to shallow left. Mobley, however, set down the final four BG hitters to preserve the shutout.
With the win, Mobley improved to 16-9 on the year, as the Cardinals moved to 22-16 overall and 11-6 in MAC play. Mobley walked two Falcon batters and struck out six, throwing 107 pitches in the win.
Houle took the loss for the Falcons (24-15, 12-4 MAC), falling to 9-6 on the year. Houle is now 6-2 with an ERA of 0.69 in MAC games. Her two hits allowed represented the fewest surrendered by a BG pitcher this year. Houle allowed just one earned run in the contest, walked four and struck out six.
The loss broke a nine-game winning streak for the Falcons, just one shy of the school record.
The teams were scheduled to return to the field for the second half of the twinbill.
