BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the 2001 women's soccer schedule. The Falcons will play nine home matches as part of an 18-contest regular-season slate.
The Falcons, guided by head coach Andy Richards and assistant coach Ashlee Orr, will open the 2001 campaign with a pair of road contests vs. Wisconsin-Green Bay (Aug. 31) and Michigan State (Sept. 2), before playing five of the next six matches within the friendly confines of Cochrane Field. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 7, vs. Samford University.
BGSU opens the Mid-American Conference slate two days later (Sept. 9), with a Sunday home contest against the arch-rival University of Toledo. The Falcons will then play three non-conference contests before ending the regular season with 11 consecutive MAC matches.
In addition to MSU, Samford and UWGB, non-conference opponents will include in-state foes Ohio State, Wright State and Youngstown State. The Brown and Orange will play OSU on the road, while hosting the other two Ohio squads.
The MAC Tournament begins Tuesday, Nov. 6, with quarterfinal matches at campus sites. The highest remaining seed among the four quarterfinal winners will host the semifinal matches (Friday, Nov. 9) and the MAC Tournament Championship (Sunday, Nov. 11).
BGSU went 10-10-1 overall last season, finishing seventh in the league regular-season standings with a 5-5-1 MAC mark. In his inaugural season at the helm, Richards guided the Brown and Orange all the way to the MAC Tournament's championship contest. The Falcons posted tourney wins over Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan before losing a 1-0 overtime decision to Miami in the championship.
BGSU loses seven seniors off that 2000 squad, but the Falcons return a total of 13 letterwinners.
