Bowling Green - Former Bowling Green State University hockey players Rob Blake (1987-90) and Greg de Vries (1991-92) became the third and fourth Falcon players to capture the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup. Blake and de Vries were members of the Colorado Avalanche this season and helped the team capture Lord Stanley's Cup on Saturday, June 9, in the deciding seventh game against the New Jersey Devils.
Blake, traded to Colorado this season from Los Angeles, recorded six goals and was third on the team with 13 assists in the playoffs for the Avalanche from his defenseman position. He appeared in all 23 playoff games played by Colorado.
His teammate, de Vries, also appeared in all 23 playoff games and recorded one assist in helping Colorado capture their second Stanley Cup.
For Blake and de Vries, it is their first Stanley Cup Championship and they join Ken Morrow (New York Islanders, 1980-83) and Brian MacClellan (Calgary Flames, 1989) as the only other BGSU players to win the Stanley Cup.
