BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University head volleyball coach Denise Van De Walle has been named President of the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Van De Walle has been the Falcon head coach for the last 18 seasons.
Van De Walle assumed the role of president on May 20, 2001. She will hold the office until December 31, 2001.
"I am truly honored to serve in this capacity." said Van De Walle. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my role as the Division I Rep to the AVCA Board and look forward to continuing to serve in this new position."
Van De Walle had served as the chairperson of the AVCA's Division I Head Coaches Committee since August of 2000. That committee consists of one coach from each conference in the NCAA. Van De Walle relinquished her role as chairperson upon accepting the president's position, but will continue to sit in on the conference calls.
The AVCA is committed to the advancement and development of the sport of volleyball by providing member coaches with educational programs, a forum for opinion exchange and recognition opportunities.
The AVCA has more than 3,100 members, comprised of national and international coaches, men's and women's coaches for NCAA Divisions I, II, III, NAIA, junior and community colleges, high school, club, youth and Olympic coaches. Other members include former players, officials, media members and other friends of volleyball.
The ultimate mission of the AVCA is to enhance the image and increase the awareness for the sport of volleyball, while at the same time providing educational opportunties for member coaches. The board of directors is instrumental in maintaining the AVCA's sense of mission.
Van De Walle and the Falcons went 21-9 last fall, tying for the Mid-American Conference's East Division title. She welcomes back 11 letterwinners, including five starters, from that squad.
