CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University student-athlete Jen Jarjosa has been selected to receive the Mid-American Conference Bob James Memorial Scholarship, as voted by the MAC Awards Committee. Jarjosa, a member of the BGSU women's swimming team, completed her Falcon career in 2000-01.
The Bob James Memorial Scholarship is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete who have achieved a minimum grade-point average of 3.50, as well as shown evidence of good character, leadership and citizenship. Student-athletes are nominated during the academic year in which they complete their final season of eligibility. Winners receive a $1,000 post-graduate scholarship. The award is given in honor of Bob James, the MAC's second commissioner.
Miami University's Nick Iagulli (track and field) was the male recipient of the Bob James Memorial Scholarship.
Jarjosa, who had a perfect 4.00 GPA at BGSU, plans to attend the Medical College of Ohio in the fall of 2001. A biology/pre-med major, she was a Rhodes Scholarship nominee. Jarjosa also was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa and the Golden Key honor societies.
A team captain for the 2000-01 season, Jarjosa placed first in six individual events and as a member of four relay events. She set three personal bests at the 2001 MAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championship.
Jarjosa was named the team's "Most Valuable Swimmer" following the conclusion of the 2000-01 season.
Jarjosa, a native of West Chester, Ohio, earned several other prestigious honors earlier in 2001. In March, she was selected to the Verizon Academic All-District Fall/Winter At-Large First Team. The following month, she was named a Verizon Academic All-America selection, being named to the national second team.
Jarjosa has been named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll in each of the last two years, the first two years the award has been presented. As a sophomore, she earned Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention.
In late March, she was named the BGSU Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year at the athletic department's annual student-athlete academic honors banquet.
Jarjosa was active outside of school and athletics as well. She volunteered as a member of a child abuse team in Cincinnati and volunteered at a children's hospital in Toledo.
Jarjosa is the third female and the sixth overall BGSU student-athlete to win the Bob James Memorial Scholarship. She joins Linda Popovich (volleyball, 1990), Pat Jackson (football, 1991), Bob Dudley (football, 1994), Kristin Gaddis (cross country/track, 1996) and Joe Burch (men's soccer, 1997) as Falcon winners.
