LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten Friday (Sept. 21), as Iowa State University handed the Falcons a 4-1 loss. The neutral-site match was held at the Liberty Township Soccer Complex.
The Cyclones scored twice in the first half and twice in the second stanza before BGSU could get on the board. Freshman Kristy Coppes scored the Falcons' only goal, her team-leading fifth tally of the season, with 21 minutes left in the contest. Junior Susan Wallace drew the lone assist on the play.
Coppes scored a goal for the fourth consecutive match, tying the school record originally set by Tracy Gleixner (Oct. 1-16, 1998).
ISU got a pair of goals from Nicole Wilcox and one apiece from Nikki Gamble and Erin Weldon.
Junior Erika Flanders made five saves in goal for the Falcons, who fall to 3-1-2 on the year. Freshman Ali Shingler saw her first collegiate action. She made two saves without allowing a goal in 16:29.
The Cyclones outshot the Falcons, 16-4, and held an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. ISU goalies Karen Hasselman and Elizabeth Chapman combined for two saves on the afternoon.
Iowa State improves to 2-3 on the year.
"As a famous soccer pundit back in England once said, 'it's a funny old game,'" said BGSU coach Andy Richards. "And, certainly it is today.
"I say that because we played tremendously well on Tuesday (a 2-0 win at Ohio State), and came here and were just a pale shadow of the team we were on Tuesday.
"And, essentially, it came down to our mental approach. We are all very disappointed in the result, and we are all very disappointed in the performance, both coaches and players. We know we sold ourselves short.
"We were not mentally ready for this game, and as a result, we got beat, 4-1. Give credit to Iowa State, they did what they had to do.
"When you're in a growing program such as ours, you have peaks and troughs, and obviously today is a very deep trough for us. We will vow to put things right, though, and we have a chance to do just that on Sunday."
BGSU returns home for a Sunday (Sept. 23) match vs. the University at Buffalo. Kickoff for that Mid-American Conference contest is scheduled for noon at Cochrane Field.
