Sept. 3, 2001
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University volleyball senior Caty Rommeck has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office has announced. Rommeck earns the honor for the seventh time in her Falcon career, a school record.
Rommeck was named the first East Division Player of the Week for the 2001 season. The MAC office chose an offensive and a defensive player of the week last year, but will choose one P-O-W recipient from each division in 2001.
Rommeck, a middle hitter/blocker, earns the honor after helping the Falcons to a 3-0 record and a tournament title at the Blimpie/Holiday Inn Classic in Bloomington, Ind., last weekend. The Brown and Orange defeated teams from the Southeastern (Tennessee), Big Ten (host Indiana) and Atlantic Coast (Maryland) conferences en route to the tourney title.
Rommeck, who was named the tournament's MVP, had a .403 hitting percentage and averaged 5.20 kills, 3.00 digs and 1.33 blocks per game.
She opened the season with 21 kills, a career-high 19 digs and six total blocks vs. Tennessee. Then, Rommeck had 27 kills, 16 digs and seven blocks in the win over IU. She capped the weekend with a career-best 30 kills, a .531 hitting percentage (30-4-49), 10 digs and seven more blocks in the Maryland match.
After just two years and one weekend in the Brown and Orange, Rommeck ranks 10th on the school's career lists for both solo blocks (76) and total blocks (279). She has 203 block assists, just 17 shy of moving into the school's top-10 on that career list.
The Falcons of head coach Denise Van De Walle will head to East Lansing, Mich., to participate in the Coca-Cola Spartan Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 7-8). The Brown and Orange will face Idaho, Winthrop and host Michigan State in the tournament.
