BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University junior Jill Conover has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV University Division Women's Team, it was announced today. Conover, who earns academic all-district honors for the first time in her career, was named to the first team.
Conover maintained a 3.88 grade point average (entering the fall semester) as a computer science major. On the field, she had a total of 14 points in 2001 to rank second on the team.
A native of Grand Island, N.Y., Conover was second on the Falcons in goals, with four, and tied for the team lead with six assists. She was one of six players to start all 19 matches of the 2001 season.
After her junior year, Conover has become the school's career scoring leader, with 55 points. She is third on the BGSU list with 16 career goals, and is tied for the school record with 23 assists.
The 2001 Verizon Academic All-District IV University Division Team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
As a first-team academic all-district selection, Conover's name will appear on the natonal ballot for the Verizon Academic All-America Women's Soccer Team, which will be announced Feb. 5.
The 2001-02 academic year marks the first time a women's soccer team has been selected in the 50-year history of the Verizon Academic All-America program. Previously, women's soccer student-athletes were part of the Fall/Winter Sports At-Large ballot.
As mentioned, this year marks the 50th year of the Academic All-America program, as the inaugural team was announced on December 6, 1952. Since that time, more than 12,000 students have been named Academic All-America team members at colleges and universities at all levels for every recognized NCAA sport. The program's popularity resulted in a significant expansion for the current academic year, as 816 student athletes -- a 19 percent increase over the previous highest number -- will be selected to 12 different Academic All-America teams during the 2001-02 academic season.
The Falcons finished the 2001 season with an overall record of 7-10-2, and BGSU finished with a 2-9-1 MAC mark.
